Job summary

As part of the new clinical operating model there are exciting future plans for Cardiac Surgery, and we have a new opportunity to introduce a Matron post for Cardiac Surgery, within the Specialist Division.

The Cardiac Surgery Matron based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton will be involved in the exciting new opportunities and expansion in Cardiac Surgery including moving into the new Louisa Martindale Building as part of the Trusts 3T's project. Despite the role being in Cardiac Surgery you will also be expected to work alongside the Cardiology Matron on the Brighton site and will provide cross cover for each other when required.

The Matron will be a highly visible, accessible and authoritative presence in clinical areas to which patients, their families and others can turn for leadership, assistance, advice and support. The post holder will be part of the Divisional Nursing Leadership team with specific responsibility for a designated area/groups of departments.

You will work with a high level of autonomy to ensure that you and your team achieve and exceed the many demands made of you.

You will need to be a strong communicator to deliver change in an engaging way and articulate our vision of becoming an outstanding trust, delivering excellent healthcare in our hospitals. This will enable us to build a service providing excellent quality care to our local community in which we serve.

Experience within the relevant specialities and/or matron role is essential.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work closely with the Cardiology Matron/ Head of Nursing to:

  • Provide professional nursing support to the Surgical ward, Cardiac ICU, Cardiac Theatres, and the Cardiac Surgical Pre- assessment team.
  • Provide direct line management to the unit managers and leads of the UHSx staffed areas.
  • Monitor and maintain clinical best practice standards.
  • Uphold effective multi-disciplinary team relationships with medical, nursing and admin teams across the directorate, wider division, Trust and network.
  • Play a key role in both managing risk and governance across the directorate and lead on operational and strategic elements , ensuring patient safety and quality care.

The successful candidate will also:

  • Have on-going working relationships with operational managers and clinical site team to ensure patient flow through the hospital.
  • To participate in the senior management on-call rota

As an experienced senior nurse, the post holder will be expected to focus on providing a clean, safe environment for patients in line with the highest clinical care and infection control standards ensuring patients are treated with dignity and respect.

In conjunction with the Head of Nursing, the post holder will address CQC standards, risk management, review critical incidents, identify/review key clinical service indicators/audit outcomes and implement information governance requirements.

The post holder will be required to deputise for the Head of Nursing when required.
