Job summary

The satellite dialysis unit based on Dixon ward at Worthing Hospital is looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic, and skilled Band 7 dialysis unit manager.

This is a full-time post working between Monday to Saturday looking after 54 patients in a nurse led environment, managing a staff of 12 Haemodialysis experienced nurses and health care assistants.

The unit is open between 07:00 and 22:00 looking after 3 shifts of patients each day, who started dialysis in the main hub in Brighton and who are now dialysing in a satellite unit nearer to their own home.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate should have substantial experience as a Band 6 in a renal setting, Previous experience as a band 7 manager in an NHS setting would be an advantage. They should also have the renal course and a mentoring qualification.

The manager would be expected to attend meeting at the main Hub in Brighton and liaise with the renal multidisciplinary team as well as teams across UHS Trust. They will have nursing leadership skills, good communication skills and be proactive in their management of the satellite dialysis unit.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. Assesses clinical care, particularly haemodialysis treatment plans, using multiple tools to identify quality and patient safety risks.
  2. Assesses vascular access for haemodialysis and escalates accordingly to vascular and renal team.
  3. Mitigates safety risks to prevent avoidable harm to patients and participates in divisional risk management.
  4. Manages the investigation of all clinical incidents ensuring learning occurs across the team to prevent future occurrences, including delivery of nursing action plans.
  5. Escalates and manages patient safety issues effectively to ensure investigation and learning robust and shared widely.
  6. To undertake formal investigations reporting back within the agreed time limits and ensuring lessons are learnt, action plans are implemented, and progress is monitored and reported appropriately.
  7. To act as a role model by demonstrating excellent communication and listening skills with patients, relatives, and staff.
  8. To ensure that confidentiality for patients and staff is maintained in all areas and that staff adhere to the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act and the Caldicott Principles.
  9. To ensure good communication lines and flows are in place within the nursing structure and other disciplines across the Trust.
  10. To ensure that there are high standards of documentation and care planning in all areas of practice and documentation standards are consistent across all areas. Ensuring there are regular reviews of all documentation, and focused action plans are produced when areas of concern are identified.

  12. Is responsible for a team of nursing and non-nursing ward assigned staff within their clinical area and is responsible for all aspects of staff performance including sickness/ absence and capability.
  13. Is responsible for the ward/clinical area pay and non-pay budget out of budget costs pressures will require corrective plan of action in consultation with line matron and finance managers.
  14. Is responsible for ensuring that monthly rosters are managed via Healthroster and follow best practice protocol, adhering to policy, and deliver the staffing plan within Trust KPIs
  15. Competently forecasts and communicates budget challenges.
  16. Recruits nursing staff with appropriate skills and commitment to compassionate care
  17. Is responsible for undertaking acuity & dependency, as well as establishment reviews of their clinical area including report writing and recommendations.
  18. Is responsible for appraising all staff annually, and ensuring that they have the necessary skills to deliver their role
  19. Engages in staff experience questionnaires and works with the team to ensure that teamwork and the working environment are conducive to supporting excellent patient care.
  20. Provides open forums for staff to support communication and team development/coherence.
  21. Is responsible for meeting the educational /training needs of the nursing team.
