Job summary

Fixed term: 3-year fixed term based on time-limited charitable fundingPart time: 22.5 hours a week

Use your information skills to make a difference to the quality of NHS services and patient education. You will work closely with hospital staff and patients to identify gaps in knowledge and find the best evidence to inform commissioning, and to improve individual patient care and knowledge.This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified information professional with expert information search skills and the ability to teach patients and staff how to find healthcare research.You will make an impact by providing proactive, analytical and tailored support to staff and patients, and will be backed up by an enthusiastic and highly regarded team.The postholder will need an Honours Degree / Postgraduate qualification in information & library studies or a related degree.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work alongside clinicians, managers, patients and carers in local settings to facilitate high-quality evidence-based decision-making and health improvement. Work will be focused on patient education provision. The post-holder will be required to develop a high level of expertise in this area, carrying out some of our most complex evidence search requests and leading teaching sessions on critical appraisal and information skills.

The Patient Education Knowledge Specialist role involves close liaison with stakeholders, including colleagues and the general public, both within and outside the Trust. The post-holder will seek out and make use of opportunities to improve patient care and patient education through attendance at relevant meetings in locations across Sussex as well as close liaison with local and national groups, e.g. the Carer and Patient Information Group (CPIG). The post-holder will also be required to produce publicity materials in order to market services.

The focus on provision of information to patients, families, staff and visitors will involve managing walk-in patient information points and engaging with Trust staff to produce a trust-wide patient information policy that ensures consistency of quality and practice.
