We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Consultant to join the HIV and Integrated Sexual Health teams at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHS).
This is a substantive 8PA post joining the team of consultants providing integrated Sexual Health, Contraception and HIV services within University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and is a network post across the two services - West Sussex and Brighton & Hove.
The post will encompass the full spectrum of specialist clinical work, supervision and training of nursing, junior medical staff and medical students and participation in research and service improvement. The post holder will be a key member of the team delivering a high quality fully integrated Sexual Health, Contraception and HIV service in West Sussex and in Brighton & Hove. The post holder will be part of the senior management team and will be expected to contribute to the administration and leadership of the departments and participate in clinical governance and quality improvement as well as CME.
Main duties of the job
The post will include staffing HIV outpatient clinics and fully integrated Sexual Health and Contraception clinics - it is anticipated that this post will include one HIV clinic weekly and two Integrated Sexual Health clinics weekly at the Crawley site - and one day a week at the Brighton site (alternate weeks Sexual Health & HIV clinic).
The post will take a lead on nurse training at the Crawley site.
HIV clinics run daily alongside CNS & pharmacy clinics and the post holder will have their own cohort of patients. They would also be expected to provide supervision and support for patient management decisions to junior medical Drs, HIV nurses and HIV Specialist pharmacists via attendance at weekly HIV viral load and HIV team meetings.
Sexual Health clinics are run on a senior medical model supporting an MDT of specialty & junior medical Drs, a mix of Band 5-7 nurses, health care assistants and Band 6/7 health advisers with staff seeing patients according to their level of experience.
In Brighton the post holder would have their own desk space and computer in an office shared with other consultants in the department. They would have secretarial support and access to all Trust IT systems needed to do their job.
In Crawley clinic the post holder will have access to secretarial support and an office, networked computer facilities and laptop to facilitate remote access.

Clinical Duties
The post holder will be expected to:
- Provide a comprehensive clinical services in all aspects of Integrated Sexual health including STI screening and management; pregnancy testing and appropriate referral; provision of contraceptive methods and emergency contraception, advice, referral and pre-conception care; pre & post exposure prophylaxis for HIV.
- Provide a regular HIV clinic, including the supporting activities such as viral load meetings, relevant M&M and Therapeutics and Protocol meetings etc.
- Take part and lead routine sexual health and contraception clinics
- Work closely / liaise with colleagues / external agencies
- Support less experienced medical & nursing staff in clinics to provide excellent care for patients always being approachable when sought to provide advice
- To ensure there is appropriate specialist service provision during the working week across clinical sites, with expert advice available for other service providers
Training
The post holder will be expected to
- Facilitate and support teams in identifying training needs with a particular focus on nurse training
- Assist with running HIV & Sexual Health related courses; participate actively in Education Hour and other departmental and trust educational activities
- Participate in training programmes for nursing and medical students; deliver postgraduate training to primary and secondary care with interest in HIV, Sexual Health and Contraception
- Supervise IRP students where appropriate
- Become and educational supervisor for specialty; foundation or IMT trainees if required
- Continually update their education in Sexual health, contraception and HIV Medicine to fulfil their continued medical education and GMC revalidation requirements.
Management
- To provide line management to colleagues as required
- To participate in departmental consultant, senior staff and other meetings within the Trust as required
- To ensure the service develops in terms of quality, innovation and cost-effectiveness,
- To develop the integrated service in line with the service specification, and within the agreed financial envelope
- To be a positive role model for the multi-disciplinary team
- To build up confidence in teams using clinical leadership skills
- To rotate into the role of Clinical Lead for the department as required
- To participate in HIV Network meetings
Research and Innovation
- To support evidence-based practice including participation in audit and developing a clear research strategy for HIV & Sexual Health services
