Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for skilled Ultrasonographers holding PgCert/ PgDip / MSc/ DMU to join our highly motivated ultrasound team. The successful candidate will join a team of sonographers in a modern and progressive trust with a reputation for high clinical standards and performance.The Trust has a position available at Worthing & Southlands Hospital. Travel between the trust or other locations may be necessary in some circumstances. You will be performing a comprehensive range of examinations including abdominal, inpatients, obstetric, gynaecological, DVT and small parts scans.

Main duties of the job

  • To be aware of limitations of experience and seek additional advice if required
  • Assess previous reports and factor the results into the report for comparison if necessary.
  • At the time of the scan understand the importance of the symptoms and other results and how they may influence the ultrasound scan, assess the findings and be responsible in determining the clinical appearances.
  • To make appropriate referrals and recommendations for further assessment and inform the patient of these.
  • Identify areas to the Radiology team where there is the potential for improvement of quality to the benefit of the service provided using clinical audits, NICE guidelines and best practice.
  • Be actively involved in decision making and policy implementation relevant to quality management, audit and quality improvement for the Radiology department.
  • To ensure safe patient care and welfare whilst under ultrasound care.
  • To observe and care for patients under investigation, liaising with clerical staff, porters, nurses and medical staff as appropriate in the best interests of the patient and any escorts.

Main duties by factor:

  1. Communications and Relationship skills - (Factor 1) (5a & 6)

To ensure good working relationships both between all staff within the Imaging Department and across multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Obtain verbal consent for examinations, offering a chaperone for intimate examinations and documenting consent and chaperone status.
  • To communicate in a concise and appropriate manner, highly complex information regarding ultrasound examinations to clinicians and multidisciplinary teams regarding diagnosis and/or treatment of patients.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills in networking with other members of the Radiology team and other departments within the Trust. Communication may be required with outside agencies and national professional bodies.
  • Work with the Radiology team to promote services and innovation within the Ultrasound team.
  • Liaise with service users to investigate service and efficiency issues identified from analysis and trends data.
  • If applying from outside the UK where English id not first language - The Ilets qualification is essential.

  1. Analytical and Judgemental skills - (Factor 3)

  • To maintain an up-to-date working knowledge of all equipment used within the Ultrasound department, and use all equipment in the correct manner ensuring your safety and wellbeing.
  1. Patient/ Client Care - (Factor 6)
  • To ensure safe patient care and welfare whilst under ultrasound care.
  • To observe and care for patients under investigation, liaising with clerical staff, porters, nurses and medical staff as appropriate in the best interests of the patient and any escorts.
  • If appropriate show and explain images during ultrasound scans to the patient, discuss normal findings with the patient and provide reassurance.
  • Maintain high standards of infection control & ensure appropriate decontamination procedures are in place and followed. Documentation of decontamination products used should be made.
  1. Policy and Service Development Implementation - (Factor 7)
  • As the ultrasound service expands the post holder is expected to maintain a flexible approach to work patterns in order to meet the changing needs of the department and to contribute to this expansion. This may including involvement in the community and similar best patient management and skill mix developments
  • To assist in the evaluation of new equipment if requested by Radiology team.
  • To follow the most up to date policies & protocols on the best working practice for ultrasound. Undertake study days to become further informed & feedback to the department.
  • Assist the ultrasound team to ensure a programme of internal audits is conducted against defined quality performance measures and adherence to the guidelines and that effective, immediate and follow up actions are taken.
  1. Financial and Physical Development (inc. equipment, stock etc) - (Factor 8)
  • Ensure the equipment is in full working order & report any immediate faults to the Superintendent Sonographer or Radiology managers.
  • Identify areas that may be low on stock to the manager to be ordered.
  • Maintain a clean and work tidy environment. And work within trust Infection control guidance.
  • Maintain the equipment and store appropriately to avoid damage.

This is a time of exciting change within our Services with a newly Developed Community Diagnostic Centre opening at our Southlands site next year. This development expands upon our services run from the Southlands site

We actively encourage you to take up the opportunities within the department to enhance and develop your ultrasound skills and areas of interests. Ultrasonographers may attend regular MDT meetings and in house CPD talks and audits. Attendance of external courses is encouraged and facilitated by the local learning and development unit. Regular staff meetings allow for sharing of ideas and feedback, which is vital to maintaining a dynamic team.
