Job summary
We are looking to recruit an experienced nurse to join our Respiratory team as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Bronchiectasis and complex respiratory infection, to work in the support and care delivery of this patient group. The team requires a nurse who can work autonomously in a hospital and clinic setting and have excellent communication skills in order to liaise effectively with the multidisciplinary teams. Experience in Respiratory medicine would be an advantage but is not essential as Internal and external training will be provided.

Main duties of the job
- To work within a multi-agency team bridging hospital (acute and outpatient) and community-based services to deliver high quality care to all patients with bronchiectasis and/or complex respiratory infection.
- Be an autonomous practitioner and carry out advanced assessment and treatment of a specialist caseload of patients with bronchiectasis and complex respiratory infection (usually fungal lung disease)
- To provide quality of life assessment and individualised self-management plans for this cohort of patients.
- To champion and foster joint decision making with patients with these long-term health conditions. To be enhanced by improving patient information availability.
- To be responsible for clinical update and action (with support of an administrator) to a weekly multi professional fungal MDT. This MDT will oversee safe initiation and therapeutic drug monitoring to patients being treated for fungal lung disease
- To deliver and train others in procedures related to host defence investigations such as sweat testing and nasal NO measurement.
- To deliver and train others in nebulised antibiotic bronchoconstriction trials.
- To liaise with lead consultants, the virtual ward team and acute care nurses around the organisation of home I.V. antibiotics
- To contribute to the national BTS bronchiectasis audit as well as involvement in quality improvement to meet an excel in the delivering the BTS bronchiectasis quality standard

Patient Care Delivery

- Develop a good working knowledge of anti-fungal drugs and their side effects. Would support non-medical prescribing application if desired.
- To be competent in basic procedures such as intravenous cannulation, subcutaneous infusions, venepuncture, sweat testing, nasal NO measurement, spirometry.
- To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care, in accordance with the core standards or conduct, performance and ethics as outlined by the NMC. To work within Trust and NMC guidelines to ensure quality of practice is in accordance with national and local standards.
- To formulate and deliver individual treatment programs based on evidence-based practice from a wide range of treatment options. These will include manual therapy techniques, patient education and self-management, airway clearance techniques, breathlessness management as well as delivery of intravenous antibiotics and nebulized therapies
- To help identify the palliative patient and be comfortable in supporting end-of-life care
- To identify the deteriorating patient where admission to hospital is appropriate and necessary and to liaise with the necessary teams to ensure timely and safe handing over of care takes place
