We are looking for an experienced, dynamic and highly motivated Chief Pharmacist who enjoys building relationships and working in partnership to improve health and wellbeing and quality of services whilst ensuring sustainable use of NHS resources.

The successful candidate will be joining an innovative, friendly and highly regarded Medical Senior Leadership Team who will support you to provide a medicines service that meets the needs of all our patients.

Main duties of the job

This role will lead the Medicines Optimisation service across both the 999 and 111 service. They will be the professional lead for all our advanced and specialist pharmacists working across the Trust. The successful candidate will act as a role model to the Integrated Urgent Care (IUC) Clinical Assessment Service (CAS) team, promoting the training and development of medicines optimisation (and other) staff , embracing innovative ways of working and provide a consistently high-quality service.

Job responsibilities

Provide clinical leadership in transforming the way that the Trust procures, records, stores, dispenses, administers and disposes of medicines engaging at the most appropriate and relevant level strategically.

Perform the duties and responsibilities of the superintendent pharmacist as required by the Pharmacy Regulator - the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Perform the duties and responsibilities of the Chief Pharmacist as required by the Pharmacy Regulator.

Ensure that the Trust is compliant with all legislative and regulatory requirements for medicines optimisation.

Perform the role of professional lead for all pharmacists within the Trust, ensuring they receive the required supervision and support to meet their registration requirements and provide good patient care.

Provide specialist advice and guidance to the Trust in relation to procurement, use and storage of medicines, including potential side effects. Create a prescribing formulary for the Trust, which includes identifying harmful interactions and assessing the suitability of treatments for patients in the context of pre-hospital care, urgent care and primary care.

Provide professional strategic leadership in medicines optimisation and medicines management systems both within the Trust and across the Health economy to promote safe and cost-effective use of medicines (including medical gases).

Liaise with clinicians, managers and other health care professionals to ensure the delivery of safe, effective and economic medicines optimisation systems.

Develop, in conjunction with other clinicians, new clinical protocols and treatments including the development of patient group directions.

Develop guidelines, policies and procedures for medicines use within the Trust as required.

  • Specialist or Advanced practice qualification relevant to Primary/Urgent/Emergency care pharmacy practice.
  • Hold a leadership or management qualification relevant to the NHS at Diploma or Masters level

  • Extensive legal knowledge in relation to pharmacy issues and risk management processes
  • Detailed knowledge of research methodologies relating to technical and clinical aspects pharmaceutical services
  • Significant post registration pharmacy practice in a hospital or community setting
