Main duties of the job

In this role you will support assessment and development of children's speech, language and communication skills. You will work in nurseries and schools with groups, pairs and one-to-one with children, and offer support and advice to parents, carers and health and education colleagues. You may make occasional home visits with another member of the team.

You will have the skills to work independently, to demonstrate speech and language interventions with parents, carers and education staff, following a care plan devised by the Speech and Language Therapist. You will communicate with other professionals about the care plan. You will take part in developing and delivering training to education colleagues.

In addition, the role involves supporting the preparation of materials for delivery of therapy programmes, plus administrative and organisational duties to support the smooth running of the service. IT skills for electronic records and reports are required.

Job responsibilities

This post offers a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant role on a fixed term basis, within Oxleas, as part of the Bexley Childrens Speech and Language Therapy Service, based within the Joint Communication Team and Deafness team.

We are looking for someone:

  • To provide support and assistance to therapists and specialist teachers/preschool staff working with children in the London Borough of Bexley
  • To carry out specific therapy and communication intervention programmes with children and young people with speech, language, communication needs (SLCN), Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), and children with Language Disorder in association with other diagnoses e.g. ASD, complex needs e.g. Downs Syndrome in a school setting.
  • To carry out the above with children on the deafness caseload in a preschool and/or school setting (mainstream and/or resource provision)
  • To carry out specialised techniques and procedures under the direction of a Speech and Language Therapist
  • To support preschool and school staff, Learning Support Assistants and Parents/carers to enable children to fulfil their developmental potential
  • To assist with administration duties as required including electronic case records, paper records, typing reports, therapy programmes, preparing and making therapy resources, photocopying, sending appointments, filing and data collection
