Job summary

This is a unique and exciting role delivering our responsibilities as an Armed Forces aware Trust, the key areas of work will include leading on the integration and training of all services on the Armed Forces covenant. The role is intended to ensure that Veterans receive relevant support services during their hospital stay and through discharge and improving employment opportunities for Veterans, Reservists and their families.

  • Increasing access to services for local armed services communities. Including Veterans, Reservists, Cadet Force Adult trainers and their respective families under the legal framework that is The Armed Forces Covenant (AFC).
  • Requiring annual evaluation of data collection to ensure the Trust is able to provide 72 hours assessment and treatment for those with special consideration under the AFC terms.
  • Wider development of nurturing recruitment of armed services communities into Oxleas workforce.

Main duties of the job

This role is to further establish effectiveness of the Armed Forces Veteran's Working Group and commitment to upholding principles and values of the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC) and to ensure that Veterans receive relevant support services during their hospital stay and through discharge and improving employment opportunities for Veterans, Reservists and their families by: -

  • Facilitating training for clinicians to ensure Veterans can appropriately access services.
  • Ensuring collaborative partnerships with our ICS and AFC
  • Performance reporting of activity within pathway
  • Increasing access to services for local armed services communities. Including Veterans, Reservists, Cadet Force Adult trainers and their respective families under the legal framework (AFC)
  • Requiring annual evaluation of data collection to ensure the Trust is able to provide 72 hours assessment and treatment for those with special consideration under the AFC terms.

Oxleas offers a wide range of NHS healthcare services to people in community and secure environment settings. Our services include community health care such as district nursing and speech and language therapy, care for people with learning disabilities and mental health care such as psychiatry, nursing and therapies.   • To advocate for Veterans. Promoting fair and equitable treatment for ex-service community and their families to meet the intention of the Armed Forces Covenant.
  • Ensure the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant, as stated in the Armed Forces Act 2021, are met as it relates to accessing healthcare. Have an understanding of these principles to overcome situations where patients may face unique disadvantage. To see those who have given the most, such as the injured and the bereaved, within specific time frames to ensure Zero Delays.
  • Develop processes, pathways and education resources to enable Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust to maintain Veteran Aware Accreditation.
  • Network and engage with the needs of the military community (serving personnel, both regular and reserve, their families, Veterans, and cadets) internally within Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust and externally.
  • Through effective leadership, support clinical teams to deliver a service where compassion is embedded, and a positive patient experience is achieved.
  • Provide strong professional, clinical, and managerial leadership for Armed Services (Regular and Reserve) staff, patients and families at Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust .
  • Skilled with specialised knowledge in caring for patients, their carers, and the Armed Forces Covenant
  • Develop and oversee the role of Veterans Champions across the trust with enhanced knowledge of military culture and support Oxleas to continue to be Veteran Aware as a Trust.
  • There is a strong emphasis on all team members working flexibly in order to achieve programme related goals.
  • To embed processes in the organisation to ensure that the Armed Forces community do not face disadvantage compared to other citizens in the provision of health services.
  • Ensure members of the Armed Forces Community, including Reservists, Military Spouses and Dependents, maintain their places on NHS Waiting Lists when transferring Trusts, due to the relocation of the person who is serving.
  • Through effective leadership, ensure that clinical teams deliver services where compassion is embedded, and a positive patient experience is achieved.
  • Ensure clinicians in departments most likely to see service-related conditions are aware of The legal principles of The Armed Forces Covenant.
  • Investigate and, where possible, resolve individual Veteran problems regarding service-related conditions.
  • Ensure delivery of steps needed to maintain accreditation of The Veteran Aware Trust as well as The Gold Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS).
  • Chair The Veteran Working Group. Ensure policies and procedures align with Covenant pledges and the Armed Forces Bill.
  • Develop and deliver Trust wide Veteran Awareness training programme for staff.
  • Establish links and develop working relationships with local and national armed forces charities and services
  • Develop service user inclusion network.
  • Leads on service development for a specialist area, developing and implementing policy for that area
  • To keep informed of developments in this sector. Attend the annual research conferences & seminars, where appropriate.

  • Utilise available resources within the Quality team effectively
  • The post holder will provide support to directorates by contributing to key areas including the strategic development of quality and governance.
