Job summary
As an expert practitioner, and source of expert advice to offenders, carers and colleagues, to provide a practice nursing lead and consultancy in developing nursing practice within Oxleas prison services on behalf of the forensic and prison services directorate.
To take the lead role in maximising the contribution that nursing makes to focusing on five main areas;
- expert evidence based nursing practice
- nursing leadership and consultancy
- education and research
- practice and service development - including supervision
- professional advisory function including continuous professional development
The post holder will exercise a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, have an ability to reach complex and critical judgements and have decision making skills to satisfy the expectations and demands of the job.
The post holder will provide advanced clinical nursing interventions for offenders.
They will provide robust clinical leadership to the nursing team.
The post holder is expected to take an active role in clinical nursing education across the prison services. They would also ensure that services are offender-focussed and reflect the NHS modernisation agenda.

Main duties of the job
- Expert clinical practitioner working with offenders, carers, and staff across the whole spectrum of prison healthcare services (primary care and mental health services)
- Supervision, education and training of nursing and other staff, and trainees from all disciplines.
- Teaching and coaching of staff both formally and informally
- Participates as an active expert in respect of clinical practice in nursing
- Has a direct clinical input/caseload as a routine part of their workload
- Undertakes research in specialist area
- Ensures the development and maintenance of clinical excellence in respect of forensic nursing care

- To manage a clinical caseload, relevant to clinical expertise.
- To act as an expert practitioner demonstrating advanced knowledge and skill beyond that associated with traditional nursing roles, including the integration of research evidence into practice by expert clinical reasoning and decision-making
- To utilise advanced clinical reasoning skills and evidence based knowledge in the management of offenders with highly complex presentations and to be clinically competent to utilise expert skills and knowledge.
- To develop, establish and implement guidelines and nurse led initiatives, particularly where precedents do not exist.
- To create, develop and design with other multi-professional staff care pathways for the treatment of the particular offender groups with the aim of disseminating good practice and improving outcomes.
- To interpret and analyse complex clinical and non-clinical facts, to regularly provide expert advice and second opinion to health care professionals, including when views may differ or conflict.
- To provide expert nursing advice on the treatment and support of offenders.
- To provide a consultancy service to clinical teams across the prison services.
- To be involved in the development of a research culture within the prison services, which will enable practice to be informed.
- To access relevant clinical supervision for your work, and provide supervision for less experienced practitioners of all professions.
- To promote evidence based nursing practice.
