Job summary

An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen in our Dorset Prisons cluster for a Band 7 or 8a psychologists / psychological therapists. We will consider preceptorship B7 to 8a roles including newly qualified candidates.

These roles can include a relocation package. The post holders will also be funded to complete formal training in a relevant therapeutic modality such as EMDR, CFT, DBT or MBT within their first two years in post and will have access to specialist supervision in their chosen approach.

The post is based at HMP Portland with some opportunity for cross site working at HMP The Verne and Guys Marsh. The Portland prisons are enviably set on the beautiful Jurassic coast, with many quirky market towns nearby, and opportunities to engage in coastal and water sports on your doorstep. Further afield, there is rolling countryside and beautiful cities such as Bath and Salisbury to explore.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will hold their own clinical caseload and be responsible for supervising pre-qualified psychological therapists. Supervision skills training will be provided if required. Your progression is key, and you will be offered development sessions to support your career planning and professional development into the 8a role.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing direct psychological care (assessment and intervention) and supporting the delivery of psychologically informed care by all disciplines within the service.
  • Providing highly specialist psychological therapy assessments, formulations and interventions.
  • Supporting the development of a trauma-informed approach across the prison, through consultation, liaison and joint-working with NHS and prison colleagues.

Essential

  • Entry-level qualification in applied psychological therapy/mental health/social welfare profession or equivalent and demonstrable practice in this field (ie professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level/supervised practice/additional training) that has been accepted for the purposes of professional registration
  • Registered with professional body or regulatory body as appropriate to psychological therapy discipline ie HCPC/UKCP/BACP/BABCP

Desirable

  • Completion of further post-doctoral post-qualification specialist training including training in supervision of trainee clinical and/ or forensic psychologists
