Job summary

The Early Intervention Teams offer a specialist multi-disciplinary service for individuals experiencing psychosis for the first time. The Early Intervention Teams are specialist teams dedicated to the needs of individuals presenting with a first episode of psychosis and their families/carers. The service assists professionals in secondary care to detect psychosis early and facilitate the engagement of people in the service.

The Trust is seeking a specialty doctor within the Early Intervention in Psychosis Team in Bexley. It is expected the post-holder will deliver effective and efficient community focused mental health services for people with emerging or prodromal psychosis.

The post holder will be based at the Erith Centre and supported by Dr Nadim Hakim, Consultant Psychiatrist and EIP manager Dupsey McCarthy.

Main duties of the job

  • To promote recovery for all individuals who have a presented with first episode psychosis.
  • To provide comprehensive assessment and intervention for service users presenting with a first episode of psychosis and to provide patient, family and carers with information on diagnosis and prognosis.
  • To facilitate a collaborative approach between primary and secondary care, in the recognition and management of early psychosis, with the aim of reducing the 'duration of untreated psychosis' (DUP).
  • To involve service users in their own care and treatment choices, and in the planning and delivery of the service provided by the team.
  • To ensure that the service is accessible to all sections of the local population, and to recognise and amend any potential issues which may be found to limit access to people as early as possible.

  • To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
  • To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively and submit this promptly to the Information Department.
  • To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
  • To participate in annual appraisal.
  • To attend and participate in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.
  • To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
  • To participate annually in a job plan review with the clinical manager, which will include consultation with a relevant manager to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernisation.
  • To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
  • To comply with the Trusts agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services.
