An exciting opportunity to join the Oxleas Adult Autism Service as we seek to appoint a Specialist Clinical Psychologist to be part of our multidisciplinary team working with adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder without Learning Disabilities.
The Oxleas Adult Autism Service works with adults with Autism with no learning disabilities (or mild LD that do not meet threshold for LD services). The service provides clinical specialist support to the Community Mental Health Teams, Acute Care/psychiatric wards and other local teams working with people with Autism and comorbid psychiatric disorders in order to adjust the inpatient and community support and care according to their specific needs. The service is also responsible for diagnostic assessments of Autism Spectrum Disorder within the Trust for the three boroughs of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich.
The team brings together a variety of disciplines including Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Clinical Psychology.
The Oxeas Adult Autism Service is currently in a phase of development and expansion enabling increased multi-disciplinary working and evidence-based practice tailored to the needs of adults with ASD and complex mental health comorbidities.
The post is advertised as a full time position, however flexible part time working will be considered for the right candidate. Secondment options will also be available.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will offer specialist assessments and support to a wide range of service users with Autism and comorbid psychiatric disorders in partnership with other autism specialists part of our MDT.
The role enables close liaison with social care, community mental health teams, acute care teams and other professional colleagues in partner agencies through consultation, attendance to multi-professional meetings and contributing to training. The post offers great potential for the candidate to pursue specialist interests and develop highly specialist skills in discipline specific assessments and support of adults with Autism.
The post-holder will also support the wider team in running complex neurodevelopmental assessments of Autism Spectrum Disorder and differential diagnosis of complex mental health comorbidities.
The post-holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team with excellent support, supervision, and opportunities for continued professional development.

Job responsibilities
- To provide specialist neurodevelopmental assessments and mainly Autism diagnostic assessments for Adults without learning disabilities and complex psychiatric comorbidities.
- To work in cooperation and alongside community mental health teams and acute care colleagues to support the assessment and care of adults with Autism admitted in mental health hospitals or at high risk of admission within the Trust.
- To provide specialist psychological assessments, differential diagnosis and cognitive assessment when needed, of clients referred to the team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the clients care.
- To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a clients mental health problems and developmental disability, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the clients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.
- To be responsible for implementing a range of specialist psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses. To provide psychological care plans using systemic or individual approaches for adults with ASD.
- To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group. To liaise with medical colleagues to support prescribing practice for clients diagnosed with ASD.
- To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically-based standard care plans.
- To provide highly specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan. Specifically for clients with complex neurodevelopmental disabilities and to apply specialist knowledge about the ways they impact upon and interact with complex mental health conditions
