Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and dynamic Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist looking for a varied post, who is keen to develop their psychotherapeutic skills and gain a broad range of clinical and applied experience. It is a part-time position based in the CAMHS Looked After Children/Edge of Care/Adoption team.

The LAC/Edge of Care/Adoption service is a passionate, multi-disciplinary team working with children, young people and their families with a range of emotional, psychological and mental health difficulties who have experienced significant adversity and trauma.

We welcome applications from qualified clinicians looking for a new challenge, or newly/nearly qualified Child Psychotherapists seeking to consolidate their training and/or post qualifying experience within a supportive and stimulating environment.

Main duties of the job

As part of the LAC/Edge of Care/Adoption service you will join two 8b and a band 7 child psychotherapists (all part-time) to provide highly specialist child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy assessments, brief, medium and long-term individual and group treatments and parent-child psychotherapy.

Along with our multi-disciplinary colleagues you will also provide initial assessments, risk assessments and core therapeutic treatments, consultations and training to the multi-agency professionals involved in the children and young people's lives.

You will be asked to be part of the duty system assessing young people known to CAMHS who present at A&E.

This is a part-time position based in the specialist CAMHS Tier 3 service for Looked After Children/Edge of Care/Adoption team.

The post holder will provide highly specialist child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy assessments, brief, medium and long-term treatment to children and adolescents, as well as risk assessments and offer consultation, advice and training to other professionals involved in the childs care.

The LAC/Edge of Care/Adoption service works with children and young people with a range of emotional, psychological and mental health difficulties who are under a Child in Need or Child Protection Plan, adopted or in foster care or living in special guardianship arrangements. Often the children and young people referred have experienced significant adversity, maltreatment and trauma. The post holder will act as a care coordinator in a multi-disciplinary team which includes child psychotherapy, clinical psychology, psychiatry and family therapy.

Key Task and Responsibilities
  • To provide efficient, effective, comprehensive and highly specialist child and adolescent psychoanalytical psychotherapy assessment and treatment for children/adolescents with severe, highly complex and persistent mental health problems, their carers/parents and families.
  • To provide highly specialist supervision and consultation for multi-disciplinary within the Greenwich CAMHS and to staff of related agencies (health, education, Social Care, voluntary sector, and youth criminal justice system.)
  • To undertake clinical audit, research and evaluation and to contribute to the development of child psychotherapy as required.
  • To work autonomously within the overall framework of CAMHS and trust policies and procedures.
  • To participate in monthly Child Psychotherapy Directorate meetings, termly seminars and the annual conference.

Clinical

  1. To provide highly specialist psychoanalytic psychotherapy assessment for children with psychological difficulties and moderate mental health problems and make decisions about treatment options taking into account relevant evidence based research, theory, practice and highly complex factors.
  2. To provide specialist brief and medium term psychoanalytic psychotherapy for children with psychological difficulties and mental health problems.
  3. To deliver highly specialist preventative work, through parent-infant intervention and therapeutic work for infants at risk because of parental attachment difficulties.
  4. To provide, as required, highly specialist psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic assessment and treatment for children and parents/carers who may be vulnerable and may have mental health problems.
  5. To contribute, as required, to the process of care planning for young people, including under 5s, referred to CAMHS.
  6. To monitor clinical progress through regular reviews of psychotherapy treatment.
  7. To deliver, as required, highly specialist psychotherapeutic assessment and psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic treatment for families who may be highly dysfunctional with complex and persistent problems.
  8. To participate and collaborate with other team members to provide specialist clinical services as required e.g. Court assessments, parenting assessments, specialist emotional state and cognitive assessments.
  9. To participate in regular reviews and ongoing discussion of cases in treatment, including, as required, children in treatment with other members of the multi-disciplinary team and where appropriate, co-ordinate and organise network meetings with professionals from other agencies.
  10. To be responsible, as required, for the application to work with children and adolescents using a range of theoretical and practical knowledge acquired over a significant period of time.
  11. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility based on the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics of the Association of Child Psychotherapists.

Monitoring and Evaluation of Risk

  1. To be responsible for working within the appropriate Safeguarding, Deliberate Self Harm, Substance Misuse guidelines, for own cases and the provision of appropriate advice in supervision and consultation. This includes reporting to and liaising appropriately with the multi-disciplinary service and external agency staff.
  2. To be responsible for continually monitoring and evaluating risk to/from children and young people in own caseload and during supervision/consultation discussions, which may be due to Safeguarding concerns, Deliberate Self Harm or other risky behaviour.

Consultation

  1. To provide highly specialist advice, guidance and consultation to professional colleagues (within CAMHS and related external agencies, e.g. social workers, foster carers, educational staff, YOT, the police, the courts and solicitors, and voluntary sector workers in the community).
  2. To provide, as required, highly specialist advice, guidance and consultation to adults involved with children who are within the Social Care system, e.g. adoptive parents, foster carers, social workers.
  3. To undertake audit as appropriate within the Specialist CAMHS Service in accordance with clinical governance.
  4. To undertake research as appropriate within the service, Directorate and the discipline of Psychoanalytic Child Psychotherapy.
  5. To utilise theory, literature and research to support evidence based practice in individual work and work with other members of the service, Directorate and the Trust and the discipline of Child Psychotherapy.
