An exciting opportunity to join the Oxleas Adult Autism Service as we seek to appoint a Speech & Language Therapist to be part of our multidisciplinary team working with adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder without Learning Disabilities.
The successful candidate will provide clinically effective, person centred, evidence based Speech & Language Therapy assessment and intervention under supervision to:-
- Adults with Autism at risk of Acute Care admission as part of the Learning Disability & Autism Transformation Program.
- Adults referred to the Oxleas Adult Autism Assessment Service.
- To provide Speech & Language Therapy input to clients admitted or at risk of admission referred to the service.
- To provide Speech & Language Therapy support to and work alongside CMHTs and psychiatric wards working with the above cohort of service users.
- To work under the supervision of the team SaLT Lead.
- To support the team with diagnostic assessments of adults with suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder according to NICE guidance as needed.
- To practice within the multidisciplinary team ensuring the highest possible standards of practice.
- To work in line with the Trust objectives for community practice.
Main duties of the job
The Oxeas Adult Autism Service is currently in a phase of development and expansion enabling increased multi-disciplinary working and evidence-based practice tailored to the needs of adults with ASD and complex mental health comorbidities. This is a very exciting opportunity to be part of a growing service aimed at reshaping how Autism is understood and supported within the mental health local services.
The Oxleas Adult Autism Service works with adults with Autism with no learning disabilities (or mild LDs that do not meet threshold for LD services). The service provides clinical specialist support to the Community Mental Health Teams, Acute Care/psychiatric wards and other local teams working with people with Autism and comorbid psychiatric disorders in order to adjust the inpatient and community support and care according to their specific needs. The service is also responsible for diagnostic assessments of Autism Spectrum Disorder for the three borough of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich. The Speech & Language Therapist works as part of the wider MDT across the entirety of the service and under the supervision of the team's SaLT Lead.
The team brings together a variety of disciplines including Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Clinical Psychology.

Provide a variety of communication assessments in order to increase the understanding of the client's communication needs and profile.
Identify and develop appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness for and by the client in a number of clinical and community environments
Work alongside other community mental health teams and inpatient teams in order to increase appropriateness of community support around communication.
Make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment seeking advice where appropriate
Support the service with diagnostic assessments of Adults with suspected Autism and comorbid psychiatric disorders.
To assess, develop and implement Speech and Language Therapy treatment/intervention
To provide advice to others regarding the management and care of patients/clients with communication difficulties
To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence based practice and outcome measures
To produce reports regarding patients needs summarising proposed care/management plans with agreed timescales
To adapt practice to meet individual clients/patients circumstances, including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences
To ensure that patients, their families and other clinical teams are involved in planning and prioritisation of their care/management plans wherever possible
