Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Clinical Lead for our Integrated Mental Health Team in HMP Belmarsh.

This post holder will be an expert nurse practitioner, and a source of specialist advice to segregation staff, healthcare staff, other prison staff, & offenders, responsible for the mental and physical health & well-being of offenders, operational management, day-to-day leadership of the complex cases intervention service in the Greenwich Prison Cluster. With the support and supervision of the complex cases psychologist, delivering an intensive intervention service to a small caseload of prisoners with diverse mental health, personality and behavioural difficulties; and with a wider responsibility for training and supporting prison staff in managing these prisoners.

Main duties of the job

Takes leadership in providing alternative treatment models for service users, including short term intensive interventions, into Segregation & Healthcare, and outreaching to those prisoners at risk of repeated use of Segregation & Healthcare.

Evidence based practice, in particular, liaising with the related Enhanced Support Services at HMP's Belmarsh, Thameside & Isis

The post holder will have an ability to reach complex and critical judgements and have decision making skills to satisfy the expectations and demands of the role.

The post holder will deliver and direct others to provide sound clinical interventions for offenders.

We are seeking to appoint a qualified and experienced RMN with at least two years experience in a Band 6 position.

In addition to the above relevant post qualifying experience is desirable in any of the following areas:-

  • Learning Disability
  • Personality Disorder
  • Substance Misuse/Dual Diagnosis
  • Mentally Disordered Offenders

The post-holder will also be required to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the Care Programme Approach and relevant experience of working and supervising staff within a multi-disciplinary team. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and verbal and an understanding of the Mental Health Act 1983 and in particular management of patients within secure locations. Experience in prisons would be advantageous.

  • Supervision of junior staff undertaking highly complex clinical interventions

  • To actively promote and chair a range of integrated forums, such as case conferences, multi disciplinary forums and professional meetings as necessary
  • To actively contribute to the strategic direction and planning of offender health services.
