Job summary

6 months fixed term in the first instance, this vacancy has been created due to the post holder taking a career break.

The post holder will be a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist based at HMP Rochester.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties of post holder, 4 PAs

The appointee will provide consultant input for the in-reach teams at HMP Rochester. This will involve attending multi-disciplinary team meetings to discuss patients. There will be time allocated in the job plan for management and leadership responsibilities, including quality assurance.

The post holder may be asked to review female prisoners at East Sutton Park, an open prison. This is not onerous and may necessitate a visit there perhaps monthly.

The clinical model in the Kent prisons is the stepped care model, in which mental health practitioners triage the referrals to the team, and escalate a proportion to the consultant. The electronic patient information system used within all Kent Prisons is Systm One.

  • Support the local team in developing and maintaining the caseloads of all patients, ensuring that Core Assessments, Risk Assessments and Care Plans are available, accurate, and up to date in RiO case records
  • Provision of reviews, including Mental Health Act assessments where necessary.
  • Development of comprehensive case-note summaries, comprehensive multi-axial assessment processes and care planning in line with NICE Guidelines
  • To prepare any necessary reports, and attend Mental Health Review Tribunals
  • To ensure that all Relapse Prevention and Crisis Plans for patients on Enhanced CPA are available in RiO case records and are updated and accurate

Rochester prison has about 750 sentenced inmates, mainly aged from 21 to about 30, but a small proportion is 18 21 years of age. The prisoners have multiple needs, including developmental problems, personality vulnerability, substance misuse and emerging psychosis.

The in-reach service comprises a full multidisciplinary team, with mental health practitioners, Support Time and Recovery workers, a psychologist and a team secretary. There is a psychology-led day service, the Bradley Therapy Centre, which offers a group programme and IAPT services.

The postholder will assume consultant responsibility within the CPA framework for about 20 patients in the prison. These patients are care co-ordinated by the mental health practitioners.

Currently, in Rochester there is 1.0 w.t.e Band 7 Manager, 3 w.t.e Band 6Nursing Staff,1 0.4 w.t.e senior nurse practitioner.

There is a room available in Rochester that can be used by the post holder. This post is supported by 1 full time Band 4 administrator.

The post holder would be provided with training in Rio, which is used by the trust. Remote working through an IPAD or Laptop can be requested and supported.
