Medicines Governance Pharmacist and MSO

Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 08 December 2024

Job summary

Are you interested in improving patient safety but still want to be a senior pharmacist with some clinical duties ? This is an excellent opportunity to further develop your leadership, multidisciplinary and clinical skills as well as making a positive difference to medicines safety

We are looking for a pharmacist to be our Medicines Governance Pharmacist as well as the Trust's Medication Safety Officer (MSO). We need a self-motivated and proactive pharmacist that is passionate about medication safety to join our small, but friendly pharmacy department.

This is a well established and respected post within the Trust. The successful candidate leads on all aspects of medicines governance including incidents and security. You will be required to work with clinical teams throughout the hospital to support these activities, in addition to linking with other MSOs.

As with other posts in a small department, the post holder's responsibilities are wide-ranging. Time will be given to fulfil expected duties. Along with the other senior pharmacists you will deputise for the Chief Pharmacist in their absence.

The pharmacy department serves the whole hospital as well as providing clinical pharmacy services to the adjacent private hospital (The McIndoe centre).

You should apply for this exciting opportunity if you enjoy working in a small friendly hospital that provides challenges and opportunities to really make a difference to the patient.

Main duties of the job

Main duties are

  • Designated Medication Safety Officer for the Trust.
  • Lead for clinical risk management for pharmacy, plus audit and assurance programmes in relation to medicines for the Trust.
  • Lead pharmacist for a speciality.
  • Provide clinical pharmacy services in line with professional, departmental and Trust standards.
  • Line manage a band 7 pharmacist.
  • Be a senior member of the pharmacy team

You will have exposure to all the specialisms and will be looked to for promoting safe, cost-effective prescribing and medicines optimisation. You will not be expected to have experience of the specialisms covered by the Trust, but must have good broad clinical pharmacy knowledge and skills.

Currently there are no weekend duties, but you are expected to provide some bank holiday cover. You may also be expected to work some weekends or late nights in the future.

There is a drive to encourage independent prescribing within the Trust and there is the potential for you to undertake the training to support the department on this initiative.
