Job summary

We are looking for an experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join our team and work with patients with head and neck cancer & ENT related communication and/or swallowing impairments

This role will enable you to use your own initiative to meet the different needs of patients, as well as being part of an experienced, specialist, diverse and friendly Speech and Language Therapy team. The wider team is comprised of SLTs skilled in other medical diagnoses and we pride ourselves on sharing knowledge between our specialties & working closely as a small team.

Main duties of the job

Queen Victoria Hospital is internationally renowned for Head and Neck reconstructive surgery and this post will involve work with patients pre- and post- surgery as both inpatients and outpatients. There is also a caseload of patients with voice impairments and expertise in this area is desired.

You will be encouraged to develop skills in videofluoroscopy and FEES and to participate in a variety of continuing professional development activities. The team have close working relationships with other community and hospital teams.

You will also have opportunities to regularly engage in multi- professional activities, both internally and externally, including MDT working groups, networking opportunities across Sussex, and relevant CENs/ study events.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Evidence of relevant postgraduate education and training in advanced dysphagia (level 6 RCSLT EDSCF), tracheostomy management, and counselling.
  • Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy (RSCLT)
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification

Desirable

  • Have undertaken training and completed RCSLT competencies in VFS/ FEES

Experience

Essential

  • Significant postgraduate clinical experience in relevant field.
  • Substantial SLT experience within an acute hospital environment, including head and neck oncology patients and complex dysphagia or strong understanding of transferrable skillset from alternative settings..
  • Substantial experience in the management of communication and swallowing in tracheostomised patients.
  • Experience in managing a clinical caseload ensuring that clinical governance and quality assurance standards are met.
  • Staff and student supervision
  • Experience of developing and delivering training
  • Have undertaken a clinical audit

  • Experience in leadership
  • Experience of pathway and protocol development

Knowledge

  • Highly specialised knowledge and experience of assessment and treatment techniques in head and neck cancer, tracheostomy management and complex dysphagia and communication impairment.
