Job summary

The post of Plastic Surgery Trauma and Reconstructive Fellow is designed for practitioners specialising in Plastic Surgery who have experience of trauma and an interest in complex reconstruction. These posts offer an exciting opportunity to develop and enhance the post holder's skills for managing major Plastic Surgery trauma, with the main focus on lower limb trauma. The fellows time will be divided between the Major Trauma Centre (MTC) at University Hospitals Sussex (UHS) NHS Trust and Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (QVH), East Grinstead.

The post holder will be encouraged to develop their clinical skills and progress in the post, taking on increasingly complex lists and caseload. You will take responsibility for your own training and development; the Trust will offer you opportunities to further your knowledge and skills and you will be assigned an Educational Supervisor. You will work in accordance with the GMC Good Medical Guide and Trust policies and engage in revalidation.

We have two fixed term posts:

6 months to commence July 2024- December 202412 months to commence August 2025- August 2026

Main duties of the job

Work alongside consultants in the operating theatre and undertake emergency surgery personally, with supervision when appropriate. Be trained in all aspects of complex trauma management, with the aim of achieving a high standard of care for limb injuries, including proficiency in free flap surgery. Attend weekly plastic surgery outpatient clinics and a fortnightly Orthoplastics Clinic held with the Orthopaedic Surgeons. Ensure that communication within the Plastic Surgery service is as effective as possible keeping both the Consultants and Senior Nursing staff informed of the clinical management of all patients with plastic surgery input. Provide teaching and supervision for plastic surgery juniors.

  • MBBS or equivalent Medical Degree
