Job summary
An exciting opportunity is available for a suitably qualified and experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join our team which provides a service for Outpatients and community based patients with acquired communication, and swallowing difficulties. The role provides opportunity to work with a diverse caseload with varying rehabilitative or supportive needs. Full time, part time or job share options will be considered.
Alongside SLT colleagues, and other community professionals based in the newly refurbished QVH Rehabilitation Unit, you will manage a caseload of patients with complex needs; including progressive neurological conditions, Stroke and dementia diagnoses. The role encompasses work with both Outpatients and those residing in their own home or care/ nursing facilities.
You will also have opportunities to regularly engage in multi- professional activities, both internally and externally, including MDT working groups, networking opportunities across Sussex, and relevant CENs/ study events. .
This role will enable you to use your own initiative to meet the different needs of patients, as well as being part of an experienced, specialist, diverse and friendly Speech and Language Therapy team. The wider team is comprised of SLTs skilled in ENT/ Voice diagnoses and Head & Neck cancer- a speciality for which QVH is internationally renowned. We pride ourselves on sharing knowledge between our specialties & working closely as a small team.
Main duties of the job
You will:
- Deliver a highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy service to your caseload of patients autonomously
- Participate in FEES/ Videofluoroscopy clinics with support from the Lead SLT.
- Provide support and advice to junior colleagues and actively work with students on placements.
- Oversee and participate in specialist MDT clinics/ group sessions supporting those with new or progressing neurological conditions
- Work closely with appropriate agencies and multi-disciplinary team colleagues. This will include providing written and verbal reports in a timely manner, to ensure that all parties involved fully understand the nature of the patient's communication/swallowing disorders and help to manage these optimally.
- Provide education, training and highly specialist advice to others regarding the management and care of adults with communication difficulties and/ or swallowing difficulties. This will include delivery of workshops to partner organisations such as Care/ Nursing Home staff or GP practices
- Maintain and develop knowledge of current evidenced based practice within your speciality, developing advanced specialist knowledge of particular conditions and management of related impairments. This will include the maintenance of a CPD portfolio, which reflects personal development.
- Strive to optimise and improve the quality of the service, thinking of innovative approaches and mirroring the evolving needs of your patients, with support from the Principal SLT
