Job summary
We are looking for a Senior Sleep Physiology Technician with experience in full and limited polysomnography, including analysis of full PSGs, as well as experience in CPAP titration and review clinics who has enthusiasm for a career in Sleep and to support the development and expansion of the service. You will be expected to work a minimum of one night per week to support the needs of the Service.
Main duties of the job
Diagnosing and treating all aspects of adult sleep including Sleep Disorder Breathing (SDB), hypoventilation syndromes, insomnia (with a multidisciplinary approach running joint clinics with psychotherapy colleagues), NREM parasomnias, REM behaviour disorder, sleep related movement disorders, sleep related epilepsies and circadian rhythm disorders.
Our centre is one of only a few in the UK with facilities for a full range of treatments for sleep disordered breathing including continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), non-invasive ventilation (NIV), orthodontic services for mandibular advancement devices and surgery including bi-maxillary osteotomy.

The Sleep Disorder Centre is part of the Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in East Grinstead and is one of the sixth largest centres in the UK, admitting up to 42 patients for inpatient studies a week, with 15 outpatient clinics a week and day case admissions for therapy each weekday. - To work as part of the Sleep Disorder Centre team to develop and expand the service. Support the existing departmental activity including overnight polysomnography (PSG), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, oximetry and actigraphy activity, and further develop the full PSG and non-invasive ventilation (NIV) service, and help establish a Multiple Sleep Latency Test protocol.
- Carry out overnight full and limited cardio-respiratory polysomnography on patients with a range of sleep disorders including sleep disordered breathing, REM and non-REM parasomnias, sleep movement disorders, nocturnal epilepsy and insomnia.
- Analyse, interpret and report on respiratory and full PSG data, home oximetry and actigraphy, and liaise with consultants, GPs, other healthcare professionals and patients on diagnosis, results of studies and treatment plans.
- Instigate CPAP and NIV therapy and provide ongoing support for patients, reviewing and adjusting treatment as necessary.
- Assist and deputise for the Sleep Physiology Team Leader. Participate in the management of the technician team including annual appraisals, performance management and induction of new staff.
- Assist with the training and mentoring of the technician team in order to develop the expertise within the team in line with departmental objectives. Contribute to the business planning process for development and expansion of the service.
