The Medway NHS Foundation Trust is West Kent Urology Cancer/Benign Centre and serves diverse population over 700.000. The Urology Department offers variety of services to the local urology population and strive to develop and expand their services to meet growing needs. This job description outlines the current main responsibilities of the post. However the duties of the post may change and develop over time this job description may, therefore be amended in consultation with the post holder.

Main duties of the job

Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care, utilising research findings as appropriate.

Support, advice and teach catheter care for patients with long term indwelling catheters.

Provide additional assessment and perform uroflowmetry and bladder scanning for patients. Assist; perform, interpret and plan care of action with specialist investigation such as Urodynamics Study and PTNS within their job role expectations.

Teach patients/carers intermittent self-catheterisation and self-dilatation.

Provide a one stop assessment for patients referred with lower urinary tract symptoms, trial without a catheter, urinary retention or as walk in patients to clinic.

Initiate or participate in clinical audit/research projects and urology presentations. Set up new nurse led urology clinics to help patients and Urology Department.

Liaise with the Multi-disciplinary team in providing efficient and effective care meet the needs of the service.

The CNS will work effectively as an autonomous practitioner and as core member of the multi-disciplinary team within Urology to provide the highest possible standards of care for patients with benign urological disease.

Oversee, run and review outpatient urology services, ensuring that the Emergency Department is supported and non-emergency work is diverted to suitable settings. Supervise and mentor junior staff. She/he will be expected to participate in teaching, audit, and research programmes as well as to support ward nursing staff as nurse educator.

The post holder contributes to the delivery and evaluation of patient care throughout the treatment pathway, with responsibilities for assessing the needs of patient & family, planning care, and liaising with the multidisciplinary team to coordinated care.

In particular the potholder will be expected to develop an expertise in provision of support, follow up and advanced assessment in urological benign care pathways.

The potholder will be responsible for planning and organising their own caseload and will have the opportunity to develop their organisational and clinical skills.

The post holder will be expected to complete the competency for the following nurse led clinics such as telephone clinics, TWOC and CISD/CISC clinics, bladder instillations, female continence clinic, PTNS, UDS, catheter clinic, erectile dysfunction clinic and BCG/Mitomycin Clinics in order to develop and progress to a Band 7 post which is achievable within up to 2 years.

These will include advanced assessment skills, performing urological procedures, giving treatment, diagnosing and providing plan of care to patient with benign urology condition, emotional and informational support to patient and family affected by both urological benign and cancer condition.
