Main duties of the job

As a Deputy to the Manager, working in the capacity of a Charge Nurse, your role is central to maintaining high standards of clinical care, supporting the leadership team, and being a key contributor to the effective functioning of the clinical ward. You will serve as a leader within the nursing team, working to ensure that the ward operates smoothly while providing guidance and mentorship to less experienced staff members. Your position places you as an intermediary between junior staff and senior management, making your ability to lead by example, communicate clearly, and maintain high professional standards critical.

Job responsibilities

This role is not just about providing direct patient care, though that is an important element; it also involves management, operational coordination, and a strong focus on team development. As you assist the Senior Sister or Manager in managing the ward, you will be a role model for others. A key component of your role is mentoring, guiding less experienced nursing staff, and ensuring that all patient care aligns with both the highest professional standards and the wards overarching philosophy of care.

Provide strong clinical leadership skills, supporting, energising, inspiring and empowering others in pursuit of a shared vision to ensure the effective management of the ward / department

o assist and support the Sister / charge Nurse in the establishment of an efficient working environment, making the most effective and efficient use of staff, supplies and services

In co-ordinating the day-to-day management of the clinical area, delegates duties and care appropriately, whilst maintaining overall responsibility

Ensures that staffing and skill mix is maintained, at all times, to a level that does not compromise patient safety, including appropriate request, deployment and supervision of temporary staff

To be involved in the development, assessment and implementation of guidelines, protocols and pathways

  • RN1/RN2/RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality
  • BSc / 1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification / training / experience
