Main duties of the job

The Maternity Support Worker (MSW) will play a key role in providing education, advocacy, and support to women and birthing people within the borough of Swale.

This role is designed to address the needs of diverse and underserved populations, specifically those with additional vulnerabilities, such as mental health concerns, safeguarding needs, neurodiversity, language barriers, and new arrivals to the UK. The MSW will work alongside midwives and healthcare teams to ensure each individual receives tailored guidance on local health services, care for their baby, and access to public health support.

To undertake patient referrals sensitively and empathetically, being able to communicate with a wide range of people, some of whom may be in distress.

To provide telephone support for the team, dealing with both straightforward and complex enquires from a range of sources, including clinical teams, patients, relatives, carers, GPs and other healthcare professionals.

To ensure that messages are communicated accurately and dealt with in an appropriate and timely manner via email and telephone.

Essential

  • GCSE A* - C, or Level 2 Functional skills
  • A minimum of 2 A Levlels
  • Health and Science T-Level
  • Completed the National Care Certificate
  • Evidence values associated with NHS Constitution and a commitment to L2 role development

Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience of working in a patient care setting, undertaking a wide range of clinical commitments
  • Knowledge of Infection Control & Safeguarding processes
  • Awareness of public health issues relevant to diverse populations and familiarity with local services.

Experience

Essential

  • Has worked in a Maternity setting for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Has experience of supporting and working directly with mothers and families.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working.
  • Prior experience in maternity, health visiting, or community healthcare support

Skills

Essential

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, sensitivity to cultural and linguistic needs, understanding of safeguarding protocols
  • Knows own sphere of practice.
