The post holder will be instrumental in promoting the success of the Occupational Health Service ensuring that clients receive a quality service based on the principles of clinical governance. The primary outcome will be the highest standards of occupational health are achieved and the post holder will maximise the use of resources and exploit development opportunities to their fullest potential. In conjunction with the Specialist Occupational Health Nurses, the post holder will demonstrate specialist knowledge and expertise in Occupational Health as a clinician, educator, advisor and advocate. To empower staff within the field and act as a change agent and role model, to ensure good working relationships.

The successful applicant will work with Trust colleagues in other specialties to ensure cohesive working when there are common interests, for example Infection Control, Chest Clinics, Dermatology, Safety, Risk management including the agreement of policy and protocol and support to implement such policies particularly where Trust policy could impact on work related health.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will undertake and support colleagues, managers and the organisationin various areas of OH practice including: Management referrals Fitness for work medicals Post exposure advice and prophylaxis for high-risk blood exposure incidents Communicable disease management. Case conferences and case discussions Multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs) Pre-placement health screening Capability assessments Early retirement on the grounds of ill health Ensuring compliance with legislative requirements Medical input into accident/incident investigation Policy development and review (at a local, regional and national level) Attendance at relevant meetings of groups and committees.

Strategic

The role of the Occupational Health Consultant will be diverse. In addition to providing a direct service to patients, the role will include a substantial element of strategic work including assisting with the formulation and development of policy and procedures. In conjunction with the Head of Occupational Health, the Consultant will advise the Trust Board on Occupational Health practice and legislation to ensure compliance with statutory, mandatory requirements as well as best practice in relation to health and work.

Ensure that the Trust follows, develops and maintains practise in line with legislation, guidance, policy and the required external and internal quality standards for occupational health

Provide professional direction on occupational health and wellbeing issues to all Trust staff

To work in close co-operation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues,

both within and outside the specialty, to provide high quality health care to employees and

external clients in addition to making a contribution to future thinking about the Trusts

strategic direction.

To have made an effective contribution to reaching the Trusts vision, strategic objectives and key work programmes

Enhance and develop the Trust Occupational Health services

Actively contribute to and influence the development of business plans, ensuring that the OH function is positive and influential in its contribution to strategic and operational business plan.

Work in conjunction with the nursing lead to provide effective delivery and management of the service.

Promote the highest clinical standards in the management of Occupational Health

Participate in the teaching and clinical supervision of the Occupational Health team

Actively participate in both departmental and trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit.

Participate in regular audit activities of clinical activity and effectiveness that aid improvement and extension to OH service.

Operational

Work as a clinical expert in occupational health advising on all aspects of occupational health and wellbeing in accordance with evidence based outcomes and best practice and in conjunction with OH Nurse Manager.

Ensure confidential occupational health records, paper and electronic are maintained and safeguarded in full compliance with the legislation

Undertake a clinical workload as appropriate to the department to include sickness absence and medical referrals, work health assessments,

They will be expected to take part in Clinical Governance activities, including clinical audit, SOP development and review, and clinical risk management. There is also a requirement to maintain and develop quality improvement programmes, including those required for SEQOHS accreditation. The post-holder will participate in the NHS Annual Appraisal process, as required for Revalidation.
