Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to deliver an advanced level of clinical practice within a collaborative, interdisciplinary team, taking a lead role in the delivery of holistic, evidence-based care under the direction of the Lead Consultant Neonatologist. Working within agreed protocols and guidelines the ANNP will exercise independent judgement to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate the clinical care and management of premature, sick babies and their families.
This is a training post and the post holder will complete the University of Southampton ANNP training course leading to a masters' degree in Neonatology. Following successful graduation from the course, the post holder will contribute to the neonatal junior doctors' rota and they will join a team of 2 other ANNP's in NICU.

This is a new ANNP training post which is developed to complement the current medical workforce in the neonatal unit. We are looking to appoint a forward thinking QIS neonatal nurse who would like to pursue further studies leading to ANNP qualification. The qualification for ANNP will be fully funded by the Trust for the successful candidate throughout the study course. The ANNP course will be based in University Hospital Southampton and will commence in August/September 2023. The duration of the study course is one year including different taught modules. A further 6 months will be granted to complete the MSc dissertation.
The ANNP crosses the clinical boundaries between nursing and medical care enabling them to take on the role and responsibilities formerly undertaken by junior medical staff, working independently with clinical supervision provided by a Consultant Neonatologist. This includes working single-handedly out of hours with telephone support from a Consultant Neonatologist. The ANNP works within the multidisciplinary team to deliver advanced clinical neonatal nursing and medical practice, education, support and clinical leadership. The ANNP demonstrates highly developed levels of critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning ability.
The post holder will use collaborative and independent clinical skills and judgement to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement, manage and evaluate clinical nursing and medical care and management of babies.
