Job summary

There has never been a more exciting time to join the Perinatal Trauma & Loss Care (P-TLC) Service with our recent launch & expansion. The P-TLC Service provides countywide individual, group, and systemic support to people who have experienced perinatal trauma and loss.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced midwife with a specialist interest in supporting women and birthing people who have experienced perinatal trauma or loss & those who are pregnant after loss.

The post holder will work alongside a small team of Psychologists, Assistant Psychologists and Peer Support Workers. Excellent leadership and communication skills are essential as the post holder will work across boundaries, contributing to the clinical pathways, bringing P-TLC and Maternity Services together.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the development and implementation of the new P-TLC Service. The P-TLC (formally MMHS) is a joint maternity and perinatal mental health transformation objective as part of the NHS long term plan.

To provide professional leadership and work closely with existing specialist midwives (PMH, bereavement, consultants) and the wider-r maternity system to ensure women and birthing people have access to high quality care whilst being sensitive to previous trauma and loss.

To contribute to providing staff support and consultation to individual midwives, teams, and other agencies

To increase awareness about the impact of trauma and loss on women and birthing people's mental health and maternity experience.

Promote delivery of trauma informed care.

To be responsible for representing the P-TLC Service within the maternity services ensuring that service developments and delivery are aligned and integrated with wider maternity transformations.

Direct therapeutic intervention including group work.

Contribute to internal training of staff.

The P-TLC is in its infancy and developing quickly. The post holders will have the opportunity to be part of the service development, pathway creation, service evaluation & audit.

To act as an advocate for women & birthing people to ensure they get the specialist care that they need

To have a high level of relevant expert knowledge and skills, particularly in relation to mental health, loss, and trauma. This is a key role in developing and maintaining high standards of care for this group of women, birthing people and their families.

To be a key member of the Perinatal Trauma and Loss Care Service team, contributing to mental health triaging, screening, assessment, signposting, support, and psychological interventions where appropriate.

Recognise, communicate, and reward the achievements of staff in a learning capacity and provide constructive feedback, advice, and on-going practice.

Use of expert interpersonal and communication skills when dealing with issues such as trauma, bereavement, child protection, sexual health matters, domestic violence, drug and alcohol misuse and other mental health issues

To support, assist and advise women & birthing people in the identified group and their families / carers to access the most appropriate support in a timely fashion. This may include developing individual care plans alongside Maternity Services; and making referrals to additional specialist services if required.

To liaise with other services and partner agencies to ensure that women & birthing people who have experienced perinatal loss are receiving the most appropriate care.

To act as a liaison between maternity and mental health services to raise awareness, improve service delivery and ultimately improve patient and staff satisfaction/wellbeing.

To carry continuing responsibility for providing the highest standards of midwifery care to this group of mothers & birthing people by supporting a caseload of high-risk individuals as an autonomous practitioner.

To be a vital link between Mental Health Services & Maternity Services, ensuring that women with mental health difficulties who have experienced perinatal loss or trauma receive the appropriate support.

Work closely with maternity colleagues and other services including the Perinatal Community Mental Health Team, Primary Care services and Adult Mental Health, as well as other external and specialist third sector agencies where appropriate.

Report all incidents, complaints or accidents to the Team Manager and assist in their investigation and resolution.

Promote the profession of Midwifery and ensure midwifery care is evidence-based and in line with best practice.

Take an active role in the implementation of the emerging Nursing and Midwifery agenda.

Embrace the public health agenda and support the delivery of local plans e.g., breastfeeding, smoking cessation, teenage pregnancy and midwifery led care

Accountable for own professional actions undertaking all duties having regard to the NMC Code of Professional conduct for the nurse, midwife and health visitor and their professional contribution to Clinical Governance.
