Job summary

The Deputy Programme Lead for MSc Ophthalmology will play a key role in supporting the Programme Lead for delivering the taught programme. They will be responsible, in conjunction with the other Programme Leads where appropriate, for the organisation and management of the programme and for the academic experience of the students on the programme. The Deputy Lead also has a key role in managing admissions to the Programme. This includes evaluating applications on a minimum weekly basis, as well as working with the Programme Lead to promote the programme, act as a liaison to students and play a role in organising induction activities.

The Deputy Programme Lead will hold a UCL honorary contract in which teaching responsibilities are clearly articulated. They will be expected to be members of the Departmental Education Committee at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and/or any relevant sub-committees and to play an active part in the development of the Institute's portfolio of programmes and the enhancement of the student academic experience. Deputy Leads are expected to act as Internal Examiner for and attend the meetings of the programme exam board as well as undertake personal tutoring roles. There is an expectation that they attend all programme team meetings and the IoO graduation in the summer.

The role holder will work closely with the Joint Education Team, particularly IoO Education Manager and the dedicated Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator.

Main duties of the job

This job description reflects the present requirements of the role, and the role holder may be asked to carry out such other duties and responsibilities as the Moorfields Trust board / the Chief Executive Officer and/or Director of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology may from time to time prescribe.

As duties and responsibilities change/develop, the job description will be subject to review in line with the changing requirements of the Institute, Faculty or UCL. The role including duties and responsibilities will be reviewed annually by appraisal/job plan processes at Moorfields Eye Hospital between the Medical Director at MEH, Joint Director of Education and Institute Director, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.

Further extension beyond the initial one year term will be subject to review as part of the consultant's work plan and appraisal process at MEH as agreed between the Medical Director at MEH, Joint Director of Education and Institute Director, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.

Ensuring that the modules which form core and optional elements of the programme are coherent and appropriate for achievement of the programme learning outcomes

Keeping up to date with learning and teaching developments and being alert to best practice (through UCL Arena, subject associations, conferences, professional events and journals)

Ensuring that the programme reflects the dimensions of the Connected Curriculum and research-based education can be evidenced across the programme

Undertaking review of the programme in accordance with UCL regulations and policy

Ensuring that student evaluation of modules and programmes is managed effectively and used to enhance provision for current and/or future cohorts.

Ensuring that the intended learning outcomes, at all levels, are clear and appropriate for the level of the qualification

Ensuring that assessment criteria and marking schemes on all modules are clear and explicitly communicated to and explored with students

Ensuring that assessments are planned across the programme so that there is a diversity of assessment methods and clustering is avoided

Student Engagement and Performance
