Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology are seeking a Programme Director to join our joint Oriel team.

This is an exciting time to join the Oriel Programme. The pandemic fast-tracked a huge amount of innovation, which is changing the way we work and deliver care. Construction is under way to build the new centre in Camden. It will be flexible and modern, enabling us to bring together healthcare, eye research and education under one roof for the first time.

Main duties of the job

The Programme Director will be responsible for leading the strategic planning as well as communications and engagement for Oriel on behalf of Moorfields and UCL. The overall purpose of this is to support both organisations to realise the project vision and key principles for future ways of working in the new integrated facility.

The specific responsibilities of this role will include being the strategic lead for the programme's social value workstream and providing strategic advice to ensure that the remaining elements of the design of the building are completed with patients and other customers in mind.

The post holder will also work closely with the research, academic, clinical, operational and corporate leads to identify the areas which will need to be transformed to make the centre a success. This will include overseeing a capacity and demand assessment of the activity which will be undertaken in Oriel, developing a complementary workforce plan and supporting the development of smart functionality in the centre.

About us

Moorfields (MEH) and University College London (UCL), strengthened via UCL-Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO), have a long established partnership, centred on their combined impact in eye research and education. This has been strengthened through their joint designation as a Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).

For more than ten years the two organisations have developed plans to build a purpose-built, integrated facility to collocate Moorfields' City Road hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. This is referred to as Oriel. Oriel will strengthen the future of vision science and eye care, which will benefit both Moorfields patients and the wide population. Developing a new, integrated facility in close proximity to UCL's Bloomsbury campus and UCL East will facilitate academic collaboration with more disciplines, to the benefit of the partnership.

Through our partnership, we want to build on our current expertise for the benefit of patients, health professionals and the wider system. We want to continue leading global developments to better understand and treat eye conditions, helping to transform the lives of people with even the most complex needs.

The post-holder will be employed by Moorfields but will provide leadership across the joint project team. They will be responsible jointly to the Director of the UCL IoO and the MEH Chief Operating Officer.
