Job summary

As a member of the Safeguarding Team the post holder will be responsible for working collaboratively with the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children and young people and the Named Doctor for Child Protection in the further development and implementation of the Safeguarding Children and Young People Agenda.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the wider team to ensure Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is meeting its statutory responsibilities around safeguarding children and child protection concerns. This will include working to ensure the Trust meets its safeguarding responsibilities as set out in Section 11 of the Childrens Act (1989 and 2004) Children and Social Work Act (2017) and Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023). It is recognised that this role extends beyond Childrens Services to wherever children may be within the Trust, including any concerns raised within adult services.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties

  • Oversee the Safeguarding Teams Generic email account providing robust evidence-based advice, guidance, and support to safeguarding queries and concerns, escalating to the Named Nurse as appropriate.
  • To participate, under supervision, in audits and Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews
  • Represent the hospital by attending safeguarding children's meetings at Local Safeguarding Children Partnership subgroups
  • To provide specialist advice, guidance, and support to colleagues in relation to safeguarding children concerns and matters arising.
  • To contribute towards policy development and review, deliver supervision and training, within the Trust.
  • Ensure appropriate information sharing is undertaken with relevant staff both within and outside of the organisation in relation to safeguarding children matters.
  • Participate in the collection of data as required in safeguarding children's incidents such as Individual Management Reviews (IMR), serious incident (SI) investigations and compile chronology of such cases as delegated by Named Nurse.
  • To contribute to the design and delivery of the Trusts safeguarding children training in line with current legislations, policies, and guidance including bespoke training, recognising, and acknowledging the complex, sensitive and contentious nature of the subject matter.
  • To provide safeguarding children supervision for nurses and allied health professionals using the Signs of Safety Mode

  • Deputise and provide cover for the Named Nurse when required.
  • To contribute to the delivery of the quality and operational agenda of the Trust

Education Training & development

  • Contribute to the design and delivery of the Trusts safeguarding children training in accordance with legislation, national policies, and guidance.
  • To support and guide staff in accessing Trust policies, procedures and guidance that underpin best practice in safeguarding children.
  • Provide and record safeguarding supervision to staff working with children in line with Trusts policy and national guidance.
  • To support with dissemination of learning from safeguarding incidents/practice reviews.
  • Identify own training and development needs and undertake appropriate training/education as required.
  • Participate in an annual individual performance review process where objectives will be agreed, performance monitored, and personal development needs discussed.
  • To attend all statutory and mandatory training as and when required to do so.
  • Act responsibly in respect of colleagues health, safety and welfare following safe work practices and complying with the Trusts Health and Safety Policies.
  • Adhere to all Trust Policies as applicable.
  • To identify performance management issues in relation to safeguarding children practice and report issues to appropriate line manager and Named Doctor and Named Nurse for escalation and management as required.

  • To liaise with other agencies, including Universal Services and Childrens social care as required.
  • To encourage staff to work openly with families and promote the recognition of the Voice of the Child across the Trust.
  • To attend Islington Safeguarding Children Board and subgroup meetings as requested by the Safeguarding Children Lead Nurse and provide feedback.

Planning and organising

  • To assist in the contribution of safeguarding children reports for the Trust Board and any other reports including for external agencies requiring occasional prolonged concentration and working to tight deadlines.
  • To work with the Trusts Named Nurse for Safeguarding children and young people / Safeguarding Children Professionals to prepare for announced safeguarding children inspections by external authorities.

Patient client care

  • To support all levels of staff in the delivery of high-quality safeguarding children practice to ensure it includes the prevention of child maltreatment through early intervention and timely, appropriate referral to and liaison with statutory agencies.
  • To provide a variety of methods to support staff development in safeguarding children.
  • To provide training opportunities and role modelling in safeguarding for students of all disciplines working within the Trust.
  • To represent safeguarding children and the Voice of the Child at relevant meetings across the Trust.

Policy, process, and service development

  • To assist in developing standards for safe practice relevant to safeguarding children across the Trust.
  • To assist in developing robust clinical governance and quality assurance systems to monitor and evaluate safeguarding practice across the Trust.
