Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a fellow in general ophthalmology, cataract and urgent care/emergency ophthalmology within the busy and expanding service of Moorfields at Croydon. The post will be suitable for an experienced clinical fellow looking to expand their skills with an exciting and varied timetable including both outpatient and surgical sessions.

This role will give the successful applicant the opportunity to gain experience in a world-renowned teaching hospital, with access to the teaching and resources of Moorfields City Road, and participation in the South West Thames Regional on-call rota, whilst remaining in a dedicated unit where they can become an integral member of the team.

Main duties of the job

  • 7 clinical sessions, 1 theatre session and 2 admin/audit/management sessions. The clinical sessions will include rapid access clinics (urgent care/emergency ophthalmology), cataract clinics and general ophthalmology clinics
  • All clinical sessions will take place at Moorfields at Croydon and there will be a chance to attend the City Road teaching sessions when appropriate, and use the facilities at the City Road site including the Institute of Ophthalmology library.
  • This post includes a surgical session to allow a cataract surgeon to develop their skills alongside a consultant ophthalmic surgeon
  • The successful candidate will join the on call doctor system based at Moorfields at St Georges Hospital. This would be approximately a 1:9 rota providing out of hours emergency ophthalmology cover. This activity attracts a ~20% uplift in salary due to the out of hours nature of the work

About us

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (MEH) is one of the world's leading eye hospitals, providing expertise in clinical care, research and education. We have provided excellence in eye care for more than 200 years and we continue to be at the forefront of new breakthroughs and developments. We are an integral part of one of the UK's first academic health science centres, UCL Partners, and were one of the first foundation trusts established in the NHS.

Our main focus is the treatment and care of NHS patients with a wide range of eye problems, from common complaints to rare conditions which require treatments not available anywhere else in the UK. The unique case-mix and volume of our large service means that our ophthalmologists can develop expertise in different sub-speciality areas.

Moorfields has contracts with more than 80 clinical commissioning groups across the country, making us a truly national centre for eye care. Our 2,300 staff treat and provide support for patients at our base in London's City Road and at 20 other satellite sites in and around the capital, which enables us to provide expert treatment closer to patients' homes.
