Job summary

The role of the NIHR BRC Genomics Research Manager is to support and lead the implementation of the NIHR Moorfields BRC Genomic Discovery and Therapeutics Theme strategy and delivery of high-quality research through the NIHR BioResource. The post-holder will work collaboratively with the lead consultants and senior management, and manage genetics coordinators and administrative staff to successfully deliver study recruitment, sample collection and deliverables for the NIHR BioResource and other projects across the Trust.

The BRC Genomics Research Manager will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing our BRC genomics research strategy, overseeing projects from conception to completion. This role will suit a candidate with a strong background in genomics, project management expertise, and a passion for advancing scientific knowledge. NIHR BioResource refers to both the rare disease component, as well as recruitment to the common disease (glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy) component also known as the Research Tissue Bank.

Main duties of the job

Provide leadership and guidance to the genomics research team, fostering a collaborative and innovative research environment.

Increasing recruitment numbers by reviewing and streamlining current processes, improve utilising staff and existing patient clinical pathways, and broadening recruitment to satellite sites, etc.

Formulate and implement strategic plans for genomics research projects, aligning with organisational objectives and scientific advancements.

Implementing new technologies and systems to assist recruitment - e.g. electronic consenting; efficient methods to screen/identify eligible patients.

Managing the NIHR BioResource budget and producing performance reports.

Preparation and submission of NIHR BioResource annual reports and performance metrics, including collating relevant data and supporting documentation.

Responsibility for staffing decisions and line management of NIHR BioResource staff. Efficiently allocate resources to optimise the productivity and success of genomics research initiatives.

Working collaboratively with NIHR Moorfields Clinical Research Facility to support genomics research.

Regular review of progress and proactive communication with lead NIHR BioResource site to identify and resolve issues promptly.

Job responsibilities

Implement and maintain rigorous quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of genomics data generated within the NIHR BioResource.

Reporting in to the relevant BRC Themes to collaborate on genomic research activity and projects.

Support the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for genomics research and data analysis.

Promoting use of NIHR BioResource data within wider NIHR Moorfields-UCL BRC research team - liaising with Theme Leads and researchers to determine which cohorts would be most useful to approach/recruit.

Supporting data access requests and secondary studies using NIHR BioResource data.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including bioinformaticians, lab technicians, and data analysts, to facilitate seamless project progression.

Draft new and adapt existing disease/project criteria for rare disease recruitment.

Monitor, support and encourage research outputs (publications, etc)

Develop and implement local patient engagement initiatives and proactively liaise with the MEH Comms team.

Foster collaborative relationships with internal teams, external research partners, and key stakeholders to enhance the impact of genomics research.

Identify potential funding opportunities and support the preparation of grant applications to support research initiatives to assist with ongoing recruitment and research on BioResource and other data, including identifying areas for collaborative working and national/international partnerships.

Coordinate ethics applications and amendments with R&D.

Management of other studies within the Genetics Service as appropriate.

Supporting all NIHR Moorfields BRC research activity within the Genetics Service as required.

Providing analysis and insights to support decision making for NIHR Moorfields BRC Genomic Discovery and Therapeutics theme. This will include comparator analysis and performance assessments to develop the Genomics service and BioResource.

Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of genomics research activities.

Support and assist with BRC Research Coordinator (Genetics) service requirements as required, including providing cover for planned and unplanned absences within the team.

  • Educated to Masters degree level or equivalent level experience of working at a senior level in a specialist area such as Research and Development.
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development.

Desirable

  • Qualification in project or programme management or equivalent professional experience.

  • Project management experience working within an academic or NHS environment, working with researchers, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals at all level of the organisation.
  • Proven track record of managing genomics research projects and supporting recruitment into research trials.
  • Knowledge and experience of handling complex relationships.
  • An understanding of the clinical trial process in the UK, including how individuals can participate in clinical research programmes.
  • Experience of working in genomics or life sciences in the NHS.
  • Experience of leading a team and line management.
