As we build on exciting new models of care we are seeking a Ophthalmic Vision Science Practitioner to support our expanding Medical Imaging and Ultrasound Department and pathways across the whole trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will hold a supervisory role, working alongside members of the medical and nursing profession, other allied health professionals and members of the management team. S/he will have rotational responsibility for the day to day running of the clinic and in assisting the co-ordination of departmental education, professional development and training opportunities for ophthalmic technicians within the department, including being an assessor for staff undergoing NVQ or equivalent training.The post holder will support qualified ophthalmic technician staff in providing high quality individualized care to a defined group of service users, relatives and carers, ensuring the safety and well-being of service users and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centered care principles. The post holder will also support junior staff to develop skills and help embed a continuous quality improvement culture across the service.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The role is based in at the City Road site, however following supervision and training will be required to work across other sites as the need arises.

The successful candidate will be required to be flexible, enthusiastic and committed to bringing the highest level of ophthalmic care to people, reflected in our Trusts core belief that Peoples sight matters.

THE POST

To work effectively in a team to provide an efficient, reliable and high-quality imaging service to all patients and service users at MEH NHS Foundation Trust.

MAIN RESPONSIBILTITES

1 - Provide diagnostic imaging services across Moorfields including the Trusts satellite clinics, private patients and Richard Desmond Childrens Eye Centre.

2 - Undertake a range of digital angiography and imaging procedures requiring expertise underpinned by theoretical knowledge of the principles underlying fundus photography, digital angiography, autofluorescence imaging and optical coherence tomography.

3 - Making judgements involving a range of facts which require analysis and comparison to optimise images obtained during Retinal Photography, OCT and Auto fluorescence (e.g. strategies to overcome small pupils, eye movement, cataract, blinking or a combination of these during Imaging)

4 - Well-developed physical skills to fulfil duties to capture high quality images during angiography.

5 - Perform retinal imaging and image analysis using current standard techniques.

6 - Perform imaging of the external eye and ocular adnexa.

7 - Perform slit lamp imaging of anterior segment of the eye using tropical strains as appropriate.

8 - Ensure medical imaging equipment is in good working condition and ready for use.

9 - Responsible for the safe use of expensive and highly technical imaging equipment such as:

  • Spectral Domain and Swept Source OCT Scanners, ie., Topcon, Heidelberg Spectralis, Optovue, Zeiss, CASIA OCT scanners
  • Topcon Retinal Imaging
  • Heidelberg and Optos auto-fluorescence systems.
  • Optos/ Clarus Widefield Imaging Cameras
  • Vectra 3D imaging system
  • Photo Slit Lamp imaging
  • Humphey and Octopus Visual fields scanner
  • Pentacam scanner

10 - To carry out simple calibration and maintenance of equipment.

11 - Participate in regular equipment testing and record and monitor the frequency of the tests being carried out. In case of equipment malfunction / breakdown should be reported to EBME.

12 - Ensure good communication with patients regarding their Imaging investigations.

13 - Follow established departmental Standard Operating Procedures, protocols, policies and will be guided good practice when performing Imaging tasks.

14 - Working with the Head of department support the development of SOPs and challenge current practice as technology and techniques develop.

15 - Participate in departmental teaching and mandatory training sessions including instillation of drops.

16 - Provide training and supervision for junior staff.

17 - Make departmental representation when requested by senior managers.

18 - Continuously review and assess your work so that you maintain and improve the quality of the imaging performed.

19 - Plan and prioritise your own workload; ensuring targets are met in a timely manner.

20 - Identify the knowledge, skills and experience needed for successful professional and personal development.

21 - Provide computer graphic services and operate several information systems relating to imaging.

22 - Assist medical staff in downloading clinical images and assist with the reception desk.

23 - Help with printing clinical images when necessary.

There is a frequent requirement for sitting in a restricted position for a substantial proportion of the working time whilst performing imaging tasks that require frequent intense concentration and patience.

This role will require frequent requirement for intense concentration.

In incidents of adverse reactions to fluorescein or other intravenous imaging agents, there may be occasional exposure to distressing circumstances and highly unpleasant working conditions.

You may be assigned to different imaging clinics as instructed by the Head or by a senior member of staff. Medical Imaging operates a rotation system so that every staff get opportunities to learn and develop their skills in the use of imaging modalities.
