Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in Accident & Emergency Ophthalmology. These posts are designed to support Moorfields emergency ophthalmology services at City Road and Moorfields South site at St George's Hospital, whilst providing opportunities to gain sub-specialist training in a specialty.

There are 6 posts being offered on a fixed-term basis of 12 months which will include 4 sessions in A&E at City Road, 2 sessions in the Urgent Care Clinic at Moorfields South Division at St George's Hospital and 2 sessions in a sub specialty clinic (for example, Medical Retina/Uveitis; Neuro Ophthalmology; Adnexal; External disease; Vitreoretinal Surgery; Glaucoma). Two additional posts are also offered to support the emergency ophthalmology service at Moorfields North Division at Northwick Park Hospital, combined with A&E at CR.

Successful candidates will also contribute to 1 in 6 weekend rota in A&E at City Road, as well as one scheduled evening session weekly.

Main duties of the job

Successful applicants will be expected to participate actively in the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of patients with general eye conditions at City Road, and specific sessions covering sub-specialty patients under supervision, and occasionally on his/her own at City Road and Moorfields South and North sites.

The clinical sessions will give the opportunity of extensive exposure to the diagnosis and management of patients presenting with a range of urgent presentations covering various specialties.

There is a degree of flexibility which can be tailored to the needs of successful candidates in terms of additional sub-specialty clinic experience. A degree of flexibility is also required from successful candidates to maximise the use of available resources across Moorfields sites.

There is a lot of support from consultants working in A&E and specialist clinics with a strong culture of training, support and cohesive working.

Duties will include:

  • Management of urgent cases presenting at any time during the week.
  • Supervision of junior staff in the service and participation in informal and formal teaching.
  • Development of the Nurse practitioner role - teaching, supervision & education.
  • Assessment of virtual presentations using the video assessment platform.
  • Triage of urgent presentations to the A&E Department.
  • Management of patients within the Urgent Care Clinic.
  • Management of patients at the St George's site who require a multi-disciplinary ward review.

About us

These posts are designed to support the A&E Service at the City Road site and to maintain a safe environment and ensure patient waiting times are within target. Fellows will work in A&E seeing patients both face-to-face and virtually using the video assessment platform, with opportunities to work within the Urgent Care Clinic and General Ophthalmology clinics.

St George's NHS Foundation trust is one of the four major trauma centres for London, and home to hyper acute stroke and heart attack centres, and operate one of London's four helipads, which means that in turn the organisation see and treat some of the most unwell and severely injured patients from across the south of England.

At the St George's site, you will work within the Urgent Care team, consisting of Consultants, Fellows, Trainee Doctors, Emergency Nurse Practitioners, Ophthalmic Trained Nurses and Technicians. You will have the opportunity to see and manage patients involved in major trauma, including those brought in by the Helicopter Emergency Medics (HEMs) as well as patients with complex systemic disease. St George's is one of the country's largest teaching hospitals, offering specialist tertiary care in Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic, Transplant Medicine and Paediatric and Neonatal ICU, and as such, you will have the opportunity to see and treat patients requiring multi-disciplinary review across these services.
