Job summary
This training position provide a unique opportunity for optometrists to gain specialist training in a broad range of hospital optometry. The successful applicants will be offered comprehensive experience in hospital clinical work including complex contact lens (including cosmetic & scleral), LVA, refraction, spectacle dispensing, plus specialist training in medical retina, cataract and glaucoma extended role.
They will also be introduced to clinical teaching, audit, research and management. Funding is available for the resident optometrists to complete the degree apprenticeship in Advanced Clinical Optometry and Ophthalmology MSc.
By the end of the training the post holders should be ready to apply for a hospital specialist optometrist position.
Main duties of the job
Completion of this hospital optometry training post should prepare you be ready to take a specialist position in the Hospital Eye Service.

About us
Moorfields Eye Hospital is a post-graduate teaching Hospital of international acclaim, dedicated to excellence in patient care, training and research. Our main site is at City Road, London but we have a large, and growing, number of interdisciplinary satellite clinics at which optometric services are provided.
The Optometry Department has expanded rapidly with increasing extended role activities across Moorfields' sites. The Optometry Department has over 170 optometrists and 15 dispensing opticians. We provide clinical services for refraction, low vision assessment, medical contact lenses as well as extended role. We play a significant role in the training of ophthalmic professionals and in collaboration with UCL our optometry education has recently expanded to provide College of Optometrists Higher Qualifications. Our research priorities reflect the developing role of optometrists and our close links with the Institute of Ophthalmology. We are supported by our spectacle and contact lens laboratories.
Candidates should be a registered optometrist with the GOC, hold the qualification MCOptom, B.Sc. Hons in Optometry or equivalent, and preferably have experience in hospital optometry.

To provide a wide range of optometric services at City Rd and Moorfields satellites. To work under the clinical supervision of a senior optometrist or ophthalmologist as appropriate; following Optometry Department and Clinical Service Protocols. Clinical work can include:
Refraction, including adult and paediatric; diagnostic and post-operative cases
Specialist Contact Lens Clinics (including Scleral & Cosmetic)
Low Vision Clinics, adult and paediatric.
Working in an 'extended role' capacity in a variety of ophthalmology clinics which can include Medical Retina, Glaucoma or Cataract clinics.
Working in extended role without direct medical supervision in clinic, e.g. paediatric CVC [Subject to completion of appropriate training and assessments].
Refracting patients to specific protocols as part of studies.
