Speech and Language Therapist- Critical Care and Acute Patients

Job summary

We are looking for a Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist with tracheostomy skills to provide maternity leave cover for 1 year across Critical Care, Acute Respiratory and Acute General Wards. We provide our services to two sites; Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital. You may be required to work on both sites as needed. There are five other SLTs and an SLTA contributing to the Acute Wards service ranging from Bands 4-7, including a Band 7 currently in post on Critical Care. You will be joining this existing team.

The Critical Care SLT service is part of a funded AHP MDT for Critical Care and Acute Respiratory services.

Doncaster is situated just off the M18. It is less than an hour to the Peak District, Sheffield and Leeds and it is 2 hours direct on the train to London.

Main duties of the job

You will provide specialist SLT assessment, treatment, management & advice for patients on Acute Wards, Acute Respiratory and Critical Care across two sites.

You will provide leadership for the team in conjunction with the existing Band 7 in planning, co-ordinating, delivering & evaluating the SLT service provided to Acute, Acute Respiratory and Critical Care SLT patients across-site & maintaining equity of service.

You will provide supervision and support to the wider team where applicable.

Where applicable, you will contribute to the provision of Videofluoroscopy services to the wider Adult SLT Team

Where applicable, you will contribute to the provision of FEES services, both on Critical Care and in other areas of the FEES Service.

  • Knowledge and experience of tracheostomy and airway management including experience of weaning, PMV in line with ventilator and cuffed swallowing assessments/oral intake
  • Knowledge and experience of dysphagia management with airways, spinal, neuro, head and neck, structural, respiratory and gastro dysphagia
  • Broad knowledge of low and high tech AAC
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD
  • Experience of dysphagia management with primary respiratory disorders
  • Sound knowledge of national policies and guidance and SLT standards of care
  • Evidence of understanding of clinical governance and its implications for service delivery
  • Experience of facilitation of communication for decision making
