Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine with or without subspecialty interest from those who are on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of being eligible for entry onto the Register. Dual CCT in ICM and a second specialty; or ICM CCT are all welcomed.

We are looking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our friendly and sociable team on the intensive care unit. We are a team of 10 dedicated intensivists, looking after a 20 bed combined L2/L3 unit that has recently undergone a significant refurbishment programme and received substantial investment into equipment (Philips ICCA clinical information system, new specification ventilators, citrate based CVVHD).

The post will have regular input into the intensive care unit in Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DCC) including the out-of-hours on call commitment and will provide opportunities for additional day time work in anaesthesia or one of the departments of the Medical Division, depending on the additional qualification of the post holder.

The successful candidate would be expected to be able to deliver daytime work on all three sites of the trust; the on call contribution for intensive care however will be only delivered at the Doncaster Royal Infirmary.We would like to invite interested colleagues to arrange a visit to the trust to meet clinicians and senior managers. We aim to interview shortly after the closing date.

Main duties of the job

You will work on a Consultant of the Week Rota in Intensive Care covering prospectively 1:8. This will include cover of Obstetrics and Emergency Theatre.

  • You will participate in a 1:8 Consultant of the week model, including prospective cover.
  • You will join a well-established team of Consultants with several Associate Specialists Specialty Doctors supporting all general services of the hospital.
  • On-call shifts provide non-residential cover of emergency ITU, Obstetrics and Theatre supervising two resident anaesthetists covering all services.
  • Involvement in undergraduate and post-graduate medical education.
  • Lead Assessments of the deteriorating patient for emergency admission to the Intensive Care Unit.
  • Lead the team in managing pre and post operative theatre admissions.
  • Participate in clinical audit, governance and quality improvement.
  • Demonstrate evidence-based practice where appropriate.
  • Undertake and participate in the appraisal process and job planning.
  • Satisfy the criteria for revalidation.
  • Contribute to service development in areas of special interest and expertise.
  • Actively participate in continuing medical education.
  • Undertake personal appraisal and job-planning as part of revalidation.
  • Maintain all mandatory training requirements.

  • Fellow of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine
  • You must be on the specialist register for Intensive Care Medicine or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of Doctors must be eligible to be on the GMC specialist register (evidence required prior to commencement) to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee
