Job summary

We are looking to appoint an Locum Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon to work alongside 6 Consultant colleagues in this highly regarded breast service for patients living in the Doncaster and Bassetlaw areas. The Breast Service includes Breast Screening, diagnosis and management of Benign and Malignant Breast Disease and management of familial breast cancer.

The Breast Service consists of 7 consultant Breast Surgeons (inclusive of this post) and 4 Consultant Breast Radiologists. A fifth Radiologist is being recruited currently. The team of Consultants provide services in dedicated Breast Clinics at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (The Jasmine Centre) and Bassetlaw Hospital (The Diana Princess of Wales Breast Screening Unit). The team is supported by Nurse Practitioners, Breast Care nurses and Specialty doctors. Both units have imaging facilities including digital mammography, ultrasound and vacuum assisted biopsy. We are purchasing new imaging equipment which will support tomosynthesis. Bassetlaw Hospital benefits from a highly rated day surgical unit and Breast Surgery patients at Doncaster are able to use a dedicated day surgery unit within the Women's Hospital. This allows the majority of patients to be managed as day cases. There is a day surgery unit at Montagu Hospital, Mexborough, for management of minor surgery such as benign lumps, skin lesions, hernias etc.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in the Breast Units at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital and the day surgery unit at Montagu Hospital, Mexborough. They will be responsible for the continued delivery and further development of a highly regarded breast service for patients living within the catchment area of the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals and surrounding areas. The Breast Service includes Breast Screening, diagnosis and management of Benign and Malignant Breast Disease and management of familial breast cancer.

Travel time of 30 minutes is included in the job plan for sessions at Bassetlaw and Montagu hospitals. 3 doctors in training (1 FY1, 1 GPVTS and 1 SpR) and 3 speciality doctors (1 Associate Specialist and 2 Staff Grade doctors), participate in General Surgical on call rotas which are compliant with the European Working Time Directive. There is no on-call requirement for Consultant Breast Surgeons and there is no plan to change this in the near future. The general surgical teams provide cover for Breast emergency admissions at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and in-patients at both sites. They hand over in-patients the next working day or refer to a Breast clinic if the patient is ready for discharge. There is a hot week rota for the Specialty Doctors 1 week in 6 which is incorporated into their elective rotas.

Essential

  • FRCS(General Surgery) or equivalent
  • You must be on the specialist register for General Surgery or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of Doctors must be eligible to be on the GMC specialist register (evidence required prior to commencement) to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee
  • Applicants must continue to hold a Licence to Practise

Desirable

  • Relevant higher degree
  • The European Board of Surgery Qualification (EBSQ) in Breast Surgery

Experience and Achievements

Essential

  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery
