This is a 1 year fixed term contract for a Specialty Doctor (SAS) in general surgery to join the Gastrointestinal and General Surgery services within Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a fixed term appointment to join with two existing general surgery specialty doctors working in the team.

You will join the GI and General Surgical team which currently consists of seven colorectal cancer surgeons, one benign colorectal surgeon, four upper GI and bariatric surgeons and two general surgeons. All team members carry out general surgery and participate in the general on call rota.

Main duties of the job

You will provide upper and lower GI outpatient clinic activity including lower GI 2WW clinics. You will provide independent day case surgery lists, especially hernias and minor operations lists. Particular experience and expertise in day surgery as well as laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair competency will be an advantage. Other day case operating will be considered, within your competencies. There will be opportunities to participate in major GI surgery lists. You will also participate in teaching and training of junior medical staff, students and other staff, as well as support research and development activities of the Department.

Essential

  • MBchB/MBBS or equivalent
  • At least 1 year working at ST3+ or equivalent level in a specialised general surgery unit
  • Completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty, or equivalent experience and competencies
  • Must have or be eligible for full registration with the General Medical Council at time of appointment and continue to hold a License to Practise.

  • Must be able to demonstrate clinical experience and competence in all aspects of General Surgery
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the role
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need
  • Experience in managing acute surgical patients at registrar (ST3+) or equivalent level
