Job summary

Band 5 Annex 21 Training grade ( Year 1 is 65%, Year 2 is 70% and Year 3 is 75% of the top of the band )

The degree level apprenticeship qualifies you as an Operating Department Practitioner: a registered healthcare professional specialising in care for patients during the whole perioperative journey.

Operating Department Practitioners work alongside other professionals (such as Doctors and nurses) and take a lead role in ensuring a patient is safe during their journey through the operating theatre.

By completing the Level 6 apprenticeship you will gain a BSc (Hons) in Operating Department Practice which has been approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and you will be eligible to apply for HCPC registration.

Please note: Some of your Annual leave may be fixed around your plan of study and remaining annual leave to be taken as per local procedure.

Main duties of the job

Along with Sheffield University you will cover the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to look after patients during the three phases of the operating theatre: anaesthesia, surgery and post anaesthesia and you will develop:

Job responsibilities

Professional

  • To comply with the HCPC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • To comply with departmental principles of safe practice and agreed Trust policies and procedures, reporting discrepancies immediately they are discovered.
  • Assist in the implementation of the Trusts Nursing Strategy.
  • The prevention and control of infection is an integral part of the role of all professionals will contribute to the prevention and control of infection through standard infection control practices and compliance with the Trusts infection control practices and compliance with the Trusts infection control policies in order to ensure the highest quality of care to patients.
  • Communicate appropriately with all members of staff, patients and relatives.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe working environment and comply with health and safety regulations.
  • Work in other areas of the Trust to achieve the objectives of the apprenticeship.
  • Participate as a team member/carryout duties in support of the theatre team.
  • At all times respect patient confidentiality and in particular, the confidentiality of electronically stored personal/manual data, in line with requirements of the Data Protection Act.
  • Assist in promoting an environment of awareness of current issues, i.e. Clinical Governance, Shared Governance, Trust issues, Political/Professional Issues.

  • Participate in benchmarking activities such as Essence of Care and patient centrometer.
  • Participate in an on-call rota if required.

Clinical

  • Develop clinical skills relevant to the grade and area of practice and be aware of own limitations and the need for further education and training.
  • Be aware of the role of the Theatre Practitioner within the major incident plan.
  • Be aware of current researching findings to support practice.
  • Participate in audit and research projects within the area of clinical practice.
  • Develop an understanding of the effective management of resources.
  • Participate in the preparation of the working environment prior to and following anaesthetic/surgical procedures.
  • Become familiar with the use of the specific equipment within your speciality and ensure safe operation of the same. Report all faults promptly.
  • Observe the fire precautions, positions of the firefighting equipment and ability to use the same.
  • To act in the dual role in accordance with current Trust practice.
  • Complete relevant specified qualifications/competencies in relation to theatre packages.

Educational

  • Demonstrate a commitment to training and professional development for self.
  • Be committed to complete the L6 operating Department Practitioner Apprenticeship within he 36 month duration of programme
  • To be involved in the teaching of other learners.
  • To complete relevant scope/competency packages as require for this role.
  • To attend all mandatory study days.
  • Identify own personal development needs with team leader through PDA process.
  • Ensure you are trained appropriately in the use of all medical equipment.
  • Develop IT skills as required in line with Trust developments.
  • Access professional support systems such as clinical supervision/preceptorship.

Organisational
