Mental Health Champion specialist Nurse

Job summary

To facilitate a closer working relationship between Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Paediatric services based around shared knowledge and joint working. It aims to ensure that the young people up to the age of 18 cared for within services have both their physical and mental health needs met whilst in services.

Working closely with Children and Young People Community Eating Disorder Service (CYPCEDS) and young people in mental health crisis and within the Paediatric services at DBTH.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute to the development and provision of services in relation to children and young people with a suspected or diagnosis of eating disorder and other mental health presentations.

For young people presenting to secondary care to provide a high standard of care through clinical risk and mental health assessment, formulation and short-term contingency planning to young people presenting in the Accident and Emergency Departments who are in crisis.

Hosting three main hospital sites and a number of additional services, we are proud to serve the people of Doncaster, Bassetlaw and beyond.Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI): A large acute hospital with over 500 beds, a 24-hour Emergency Department (ED), and trauma unit status. In addition to the full range of district general hospital care, DRI also provides some specialist services including vascular surgery. It has inpatient, day case, diagnostic and outpatient facilities.

Bassetlaw Hospital (BH) in Worksop: An acute hospital with over 170 beds, a 24-hour Emergency Department (ED) and the full range of district general hospital services including a breast care unit and renal dialysis. Bassetlaw has inpatient, day case and outpatient facilities.

Montagu Hospital (MH) in Mexborough: A small nonacute hospital with over 50 inpatient beds for people who need further rehabilitation before they can be discharged.There is a nurse-led minor injuries unit, open 9am to 9pm.

Clinical & Professional

The post holder will:-

Assist in developing Trust policy to ensure practice meets internal and external healthcare standards as required.

Support the clinical areas to further identify local mental health champions to improve the education

Contribute to the care plans for young people in treatment for an eating disorder with an emphasis on the physical health needs, whilst considering their mental health needs.

Working closely with the local paediatric ward and adult wards, supporting, and delivering of care packages for young people under CAMHS or with behaviour that challenges.

Maintain a high standard of clinical work in compliance with NICE guidelines and the Care Quality Commission.

Use a variety of techniques to communicate effectively with people according to their age understanding language and ability. This may include working with interpreters, play skills with a young child and adapted language for young people with learning differences.

To communicate information regarding children and young people in an empathic and supportive way using appropriate skills in situations which can be emotional and sometimes potentially volatile

Maintain accurate and clear documentation and clear communication.

Meeting the trust values, is comfortable working autonomously but also can engage with the team.

Management

Assist in the development of audit and report measurable outcomes to demonstrate improved outcomes and patient experience relating to sepsis.

Participate in the investigation of any datix and complaints to support future care by highlighting lessons learnt.

To contribute to a culture that recognises and works in partnership with patients and their families, involving them in all decisions

Contribute in developing evidenced based policies for the service when required

Communicate effectively with medical, nursing and therapy staff in clinical departments. Build effective relationships by use of appropriate questioning, clarification and language.

Actively participate in the multidisciplinary meetings to optimise patient care

Report and escalate any quality performance or operational problems identified that could impact patient safety and impact effective delivery of trust wide/ national initiatives.

Training and Education

Support the development and delivery of eating disorder training and coaching package for hospital-based paediatric nurses and staff.

Research and Audit

Participate actively in peer review and present results

To participate in clinical audit working with the Trust Audit Department.

Network with local, regional and national groups to ensure up to date practice

Personal Development

Act as an effective clinical and professional role model supporting the health care team through mentoring, teaching, counselling and appropriately documenting discussions.

Maintain own knowledge, skill and competence. Keep updated on new advances in treatment and development.
