Job description

Job responsibilities

We accept hyperacute stroke patients from a catchment area including Doncaster, Bassetlaw, and parts of the Rotherham, Barnsley, and North Lincs CCGs. Hyperacute Stroke care is highly consultant delivered, supported by ACPs and a team of junior doctors. The Stroke consultant of the day sees patients acutely (including delivering thrombolysis and assessing for thrombectomy) as well as new patients from overnight. This is delivered with fixed HASU days and a rotating weekend (Fri-Sun) rota.

Hyperacute patients from out of area who require longer as an inpatient are repatriated to their local stroke unit after 72 hours.

Ongoing HASU/ASU/Rehab care is delivered across 3 sites DRI for hyperacute/acute stroke care with further rehab on the Rehab 2 ward at Mexborough Hospital for Doncaster CCG patients, and ward A4 at Bassetlaw Hospital for Bassetlaw CCG patients. Whilst on the DRI site, the admitting Stroke consultant maintains continuity of care for their admitted patients, with cross cover at weekends and for leave. This post would pair with an existing consultant in Stroke/Acute Medicine.

We have short door to needle times for IV thrombolysis, and are able to utilise urgent MR scanning for wake up strokes. We are developing CT perfusion scanning

We run daily weekday TIA clinics, with access to same day carotid duplex, MRI, and CT angiography. Urgent patients are seen ad-hoc at weekends by Stroke consultants supported by ACPs.

A nascent Stroke spasticity management service is being piloted.
