An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Head of Safeguarding to join our dynamic and motivated safeguarding team at DBTH.

The post holder will work alongside the existing experienced safeguarding professionals ensuring statutory safeguarding duties are met.

The successful candidate will have a strong safeguarding background and leadership competencies necessary as a forward thinking, enthusiastic and motivated nurse with a passion for improving outcomes.

In collaboration with the named professionals for safeguarding children, young people and adults and wider safeguarding team, the Head of Safeguarding adults and children will support all activities necessary to ensure that the Trust meets its statutory responsibilities in safeguarding children and adults using its services, and promoting their welfare.

Main duties of the job

The role involves the strategic oversight of Safeguarding Adults and Children portfolio.

  • Structures and systems within the hospital to support safe and seamless practice, good communication and a united approach to safeguarding children and adults, who will receive timely and appropriate care.
  • A robust training programme providing staff with required knowledge and awareness to respond appropriately to concerns related to the abuse and neglect of children and vulnerable adults and to understand where to access advice or guidance at all times.
  • The post holder will participate in Local Safeguarding Adults and Children Board activities, which may include sitting on the Board or sub committees, as appropriate.
  • Develop and promote safe clinical practice for safeguarding issues in line with national guidance. Implement effective quality and audit systems and implement and monitor agreed policies and procedures

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Support and advise the Trust Board on child and adult safeguarding matters in conjunction with other named and designated professionals.
  • Lead on the planning and strategic organisation of safeguarding and work with other named professionals in planning and developing a strategy/development plan which includes findings from Serious Case Reviews and learning from concerns raised and investigated.
  • Lead on identified developments to the safeguarding agenda working alongside the children and adult safeguarding teams.
  • Professionally lead and operationally manage all the safeguarding team members as delegated by the Deputy Chief Nurse.
  • Provide expert advice (direct and indirect) to clinical, managerial and support staff within the Trust and to other relevant external agencies (eg. police, social care) in the management of safeguarding issues including neglect, emotional and physical abuse, fabricated or induced illness, sexual abuse, honour-based violence, trafficking, sexual exploitation, detention and prevent strategy.
  • Attend and contribute to Strategic Boards as delegated by the Chief Nurse or Deputy Chief Nurse.
  • Provide support and advice to the Trust Board on Safeguarding Adults & Children matters.
  • To contribute to the planning and strategic organisation of safeguarding adults & children services in conjunction with the Deputy Chief Nurse, named professionals and Safeguarding Teams.
  • Ensure advice is available on day to day management of the children and families where there are safeguarding adults & children concerns, to all specialities within the Trust.

  • Assume responsibility for and support staff in assessing and evaluating evidence, preparing and writing reports for case conferences, court proceedings and appearances.
  • Support Section 47 and 42 enquiries and investigations associated with the Trust, working collaboratively with the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) team.
