Job summary

Whether you have prior experience or are new to health care, this is a fantastic opportunity to join our welcoming and helpful Trust as a highly valued team member providing safe and effective care to our patients, and provides an opportunity for you to develop within the workplace. All Apprentice Healthcare Assistants will complete an induction programme and the Care Certificate on commencement of post. Apprentice Healthcare Assistants will then go on to complete a 15 month apprenticeship programme, and upon successful completion and satisfactory reference from your line manager, you will commence in post as a band 2 Trained Healthcare Assistant with DBTH.

Main duties of the job

You will work alongside nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals to provide a positive experience to our patients and their relatives at times of need. You will support patients in various ways such as:

  • washing and dressing
  • toileting
  • bed making
  • serving patients meals/assisting with feeding
  • helping people to mobilise
  • assisting with patients' overall comfort
  • monitoring patients' conditions by taking temperatures, pulse, respirations and weight national early warning scores (NEWS)
  • providing encouragement to lifestyle and behaviour change

The care that you will provide is paramount to our ability to provide high quality and safe services which run 24 hours 7 days a week. You will be required to work flexibly as your working rota will include nights, weekends, and bank holidays.

You will be an excellent communicator, able to prioritise taking into consideration the variety of patients needs and also be able to follow instructions.

Experience

  • No formal qualifications for Trainee Healthcare Assistant (HCA) or Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW)

Desirable

  • Experience in the healthcare setting and / or working with people using customer care skills and compassion

Interpersonal Skills

Essential

  • Good standard of verbal communication and listening skills with a customer focus
  • Tactful and diplomatic approach
  • Ability to meet contractual obligations e.g. shift patterns
  • Good standard of written communication skills
  • Willingness to work under the guidance of trained nursing staff
