Job summary

This is an excellent opportunity to join the Estates team at Doncaster Royal Infirmary as a Grounds and Gardens Operative.

Based at Doncaster , The successful candidate will help to maintain the hospital grounds, ensuring that they continue to provide a pleasant environment for patients, staff and visitors.

Were looking for someone who recognises the importance of a well presented hospital, preferably with a passion for gardening and a desire to help provide a hospital site that is suitable for the delivery of high quality healthcare.

You will be expected to demonstrate a range of skills relevant to the post, as well as a flexible, committed and conscientious approach to work.

Main duties of the job

Maintenance of grounds: Carry out estates horticulture, grounds and garden maintenance across site, as well as other specialized works.

Preparing land for planting & sowing: To include single and double digging, hoeing, raking and levelling. Application of fertilizers and use of hand and power driven tools.

Maintaining gravelled areas, roadways, footpaths & hard-standings: To include hoeing, raking, levelling, sweeping & application of chemical weed control.

Establish planting and maintaining of ornamental planting & small trees: Inclusive of shrubs, hedges, herbaceous, bulb root, root balled bedding containers, hanging baskets, deciduous & evergreen trees, whips and standard.

Planting, maintaining and irrigation of interior plants: Interior plants and features routinely pruned, trained, removal of dead, damaged and diseased. Modifications in the replacement or application of mulch, irrigation, pest and disease control, use of hand tools.

Protection of young plants in protected environments: Propagation by seed, stem leaf, root cutting and division. Use of hormones, controlling pests and diseases. Irrigation and feeding, planting on internally and externally.

Essential

  • Experience of working in a professional horticultural background or other similar job role for at least 1 year +

Desirable

  • To be able to show initiative & creativity with projects and problem solving.
  • Seasonal and project work

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE's or Equivalent at or above pass grade (English, Mathematics, Science)
  • Full-drivers Licence

Desirable

  • Tractors Licence
  • BTEC or NVQ in horticulture / gardening
  • Completed an apprenticeship in gardening/ grounds-keeping/ horticulture

  • To be approachable, to be able to listen and work with written, oral or verbal instruction.
  • Regular communication between team members and management.
  • Be able to work autonomously as well as in a team.
