Job summary
The neuromuscular post provides support for a mainly outpatient based neuromuscular service and day case activity around SMA gene therapy and other disease modifying treatments. Post holders will share clinical responsibilities with the other clinical fellows and the 8 StRs. They will also be expected to help with development of ward protocols and undertake audit projects and clinical service guidelines. Clinical research activities will also be encouraged. There will be an on-call commitment for all posts to neurology and neurosurgery, inclusive of long-day shifts and weekends.
This post offers a unique training opportunity. It is suitable for a post-MRCPCH paediatric neurology trainee, who has completed or is about to complete the CCT training and wishes to pursue a very focused 1 year training in neuromuscular disorders, allowing him/her to pursue a career in paediatric neurology with a special interest in neuromuscular disorders. The post is a full time appointment, but applications from doctors wishing to work on a part-time basis will also be welcomed.
Main duties of the job
Specific Clinical Duties
Specific duties will include clerking and follow-on care of children in outpatient, day case and inpatient settings at GOSH, completing and collating investigations of patients coming to the clinics, involvement in the teaching, research and audits.
The appointee will acquire skills in the assessment, investigation and multidisciplinary management of neuromuscular disorders, and will supervise the neuromuscular SPR in their clinical work. This post holder will be trained in performing needle muscle biopsy and its clinical interpretation and will help organise the monthly muscle biopsy list. There will be dedicated training and experience in disease modifying treatments for spinal muscular atrophy, mainly delivered through work on the day case Ward.
The clinical fellow will be trained in clinical-radiological correlation in neuromuscular disorders and will lead on organising the muscle MRI meeting. The appointee will assist in advising on other children both within and outside the hospital who have neurological problems. All patients assessed by the clinical fellow will be reviewed jointly with a consultant and support and supervision will be available from senior colleagues at all times.
There are close working relationships with the Departments of Neuroradiology, Neurophysiology, Histopathology, Paediatric Intensive Care and Respiratory, Orthopaedic and Cardiac teams.
