Job summary

The epilepsy post provides support for the in-patient telemetry service, the outpatient specialist epilepsy clinics and several MDT meetings that include predominantly the Epilepsy surgery MDT but also monthly epilepsy genomic MDT. Post holders will share clinical responsibilities with the other clinical fellows and the Specialist Registrars. They will also be expected to help with development of ward protocols and undertake audit projects and clinical service guidelines. Clinical research activities will also be encouraged. There will be an on-call commitment for all posts to the Senior Medical Officer at night rota, inclusive of long-day shifts, and weekends (covering neurology).

Main duties of the job

The post holder would be expected to be involved in the day-to-day running of the Epilepsy Unit with overall clinical supervision of the telemetry unit, supported by the attending consultant. The post holder will also have the opportunity to gain experience and confidence in video EEG telemetry reporting supervised by Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologists.

The post-holder supports the fast-track/urgent review service in the epilepsy unit, seeing referrals on Rapid Assessment Neurology Unit (RANU) e.g. referrals of children with infantile spasms and those requiring priority assessment in the Children's Epilepsy Surgery Service (CESS).

The post holder would also be expected to participate in the epilepsy clinic with responsibility of seeing new patients and follow-up patients supervised by the consultant. With experience, the post-holder may also lead follow-up clinics and support the ketogenic diet and VNS service, gaining competencies to deliver these services.

The post holder would be accountable to the Consultants within the Department but also responsible to the Epilepsy Unit clinical lead.
