Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a motivated experienced nurse to cover maternity leave for a combined fetal cardiology and cardiac nurse specialist post. You will support, educate and prepare families for the arrival of a newborn baby with a wide range of congenital heart disease but provide seamless, expert on going care. We are looking for an experienced children's cardiac specialist nurse to join our current dynamic fetal and cardiac nurse specialist teams. You will need to be a cardiac children's nurse with vision and enthusiasm to contribute to the continued quality and the developmental success of the service, with a commitment to children and families both internal and external to the trust. The role includes managing your own caseload of families with complex cardiac needs; providing complex psychosocial support & preparing them for a variety of cardiac pathways they will be embarking on. You will need to work closely with the multiprofessional team, including the fetal cardiologist, paediatric cardiologists, paediatricians, fetal echocardiographers, obstetricians, local community services and allied health professionals. A thorough knowledge of congenital heart conditions and fetal circulation is essential to support your decision making and escalation of care as well as an ability to support and teach families. Hours can be negotiated and a job share would be considered.
Main duties of the job
Learn expert and specialist nursing skills in the clinic setting to support and prepare families who have had an antenatal diagnosis of CHD in partnership with consultant fetal cardiologist and multidisciplinary team (MDT).

Provide expert ongoing support of the mother and family around prenatal fetal diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD) up to birth and until follow up by cardiologist or relevant postnatal team within GOSH or local care
Provide information, expert clinical advice and support to families of complex cardiac patients
Be a highly competent, knowledgeable clinician ensuring the provision of high quality evidence based nursing care for families of complex cardiac patients
Ability to escalate clinical concerns and respond to emergency situations, utilising expert clinical judgement and decision making to initiate appropriate interventions and treatment for own patient caseload
Support the effective management of patient activity throughout the care pathway with a focus on continuous quality improvement.
Actively participate in an annual appraisal process including a review of job plans and of the service, ensuring it meets the needs of the children, young people, their families, and the Departmental/Divisional/Trust objectives
