An opportunity has arisen for a Biomedical Scientist to work in the Chemical Pathology Department at Great Ormond Street Hospital. You will become part of a team of 60+ people in a busy department comprising of Rapid Response, routine, enzyme, metabolic & newborn screening laboratories which provide specialised biochemical diagnostic & monitoring services to patients both within the hospital and external users worldwide.The department is well equipped & covers a wide range of analytical techniques & instrumentation including Tandem MS, GC-MS, HPLC/UHPLC, Vitros, Liaison, IDS and ICP-MS. Previous experience of working within paediatric laboratory medicine would beadvantageous. This is a post within Rapid Response Laboratory and the successful candidate will be required to participate in the extended day and out-of-hours shift service. Core working hours are 08.00 to 20.00, which are covered by 3 shifts, 8am - 4.30pm, 9am - 5.30pm and 11.30am - 8pm.Participation in the rostered night shift (8pm to 8am) is mandatory and immediate.

Main duties of the job
- Undertake laboratory techniques in line with department standard operating procedure
- To carry out all laboratory investigations to a high standard of technical excellence
- To be able to work independently within their areas of knowledge and expertise
- To authorise and report results of investigations, to interpret results to assist diagnosis
- To ensure that all results are reported within agreed turn- around times
- To take responsibility for the internal quality control and the external quality assessment schemes for designated tests
- To assist in the management of the departmental quality systems as directed by the laboratory manager and quality manager
- To plan and take responsibility for the efficient and effective organisation of work
- Supervises and undertakes the technical work
- To keep a check of stocks, reagents and consumables and to order supplies as appropriate
